Counselor’s Corner—1st grade East View Elementary School Selfishness and Jealousy Selfishness and jealousy if not addressed as children can develop in to adult resentment and insensitivity so as parent we must ad- Where Kids Shine dress these two behaviors. Jealousy is an insecurity or fear that one is not good enough. Selfishness occurs due to parents giving Parent Tips!! in out of fatigue or not enough time spent teaching compromise to our children. Selfishness and true security do not happen automatically so here are some ideas to use if you are seeing these 2 behaviors with your children: Jealousy Home Compliment each child in the family regularly Provide regular, equal, and individual attention to each child in the of family. Teach each child deep values – help child appreciate how much he has and that each family has different strengths. the Increase your child’s confidences by helping him build more social skills such as empathy, recognizing other’s feelings, listening, and Shining sharing. Suns Selfishness Talk to your child often and privately about the hurt feelings when he is selfish. Praise him when he does any unselfish act no matter how small and this will help him fell good about being unselfish Practice what you preach- put your spouse or child first more often is an excellent teaching tool If necessary temporarily remove your child from play when he is being very selfish.
