This book does not describe how to install the Solaris operating environment on networked systems or how to use the Solaris 8 Interactive Installation Program, Solaris JumpStartTM , or Solaris custom JumpStart to set up, automate, customize, and perform the installation of Solaris on any number of systems in a large enterprise network environment. These advanced topics are covered in the Solaris 8 Advanced Installation Guide. Who Should Use This Book This book is intended for users and system administrators who want to install Solaris software on a single system with Solaris Web Start, Sun Microsystems’ graphical, wizard based, JavaTM powered software installation application. How This Book Is Organized This section describes the chapters in this book. Chapter 1 defines terms used in this book and describes how to plan and set up for the installation process. 7 Chapter 2 describes how to use Solaris Web Start to configure your system and install the Solaris software. Chapter 3 discusses how to back up and plan for upgrading a system and how to set up, configure, and upgrade Solaris on a system. It also describes how to clean up after upgrading a system. Chapter 4 describes how to add and remove individual software packages after installing the Solaris software. Chapter 5 describes some of the problems you may encounter during installation and provides possible solutions.
