NMSBA, which is made possible by the Laboratory Partnership with Small Business Tax Credit Act, was initiated by the New Mexico State Legislature in 2000 and expanded in 2007. Since its inception, NMSBA has allowed over 2600 small New Mexico businesses to access the scientific and technical expertise of Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories and specialized contractors. In an effort to stimulate economic development across the State, an investment of $4.8 million was made in 2016 by the State of New Mexico and the two national laboratories. In the past year, this investment helped 365 small businesses in 29 counties. NMSBA has a particular focus on rural area small businesses, which this year made up 61 percent of our customers. Through NMSBA, small businesses receive technical assistance equivalent to $20,000 if they are located outside Bernalillo County and $10,000 if they are located in Bernalillo County. This investment has resulted in increased competitiveness of the businesses and the improved economic health of our State, as measured through client surveys and return on the State’s tax investment. One such success story is the Smart Battery Manager Leveraged Project, which, along with Tibbar Plasma Technology from Los Alamos, was presented with the “Honorable Speaker Ben Luján Award for Small Business Excellence.” This award is given each year to the NMSBA project(s) demonstrating the most economic impact. The Smart Battery Manager Leveraged Project supported five small businesses, four in Alamogordo and one in Albuquerque, which are trying to capture a portion of the huge global unmanned vehicle market. With NMSBA’s help, these companies were able to advance the monitoring of batteries used in unmanned systems, improving safe and reliable operations and enabling them to plan even more complicated and involved missions. So far, the companies have received $2.5 million in new investments and added 12 new employees. This Legislative Booklet provides a listing of all the small businesses throughout the State that have taken advantage of assistance provided by the national laboratories since the inception of NMSBA. The small businesses are sorted by Senate and House districts. We hope you will take a moment to review the booklet to see the variety of small businesses working with NMSBA.
