Volume 48 Issue No. 2 August 31, 2015 theinterrobang.ca NEWS 3 Dallas Smith and Petric to headline Froshfest JESSICA THOMPSON INTERROBANG Country music will be ringing through the halls of Fanshawe’s J Gym on Thursday, September 10. “For our frosh concerts, we al- ways cycle through different genres for our headlining act,” said VP En- tertainment for the Fanshawe Stu- dent Union (FSU), Kevin Kaisar. And this year’s star is Dallas Smith, known for his hits such as “Wastin’ Gas” and “Lifted”. Smith has been moving up in the country world, generating five sin- gles from his first album Jumped Right In and was nominated for Country Album of the Year at the 2013 Juno Awards. But it was the decision to partner with the School of Transportation Technology that made this give- away truly unique. “We didn’t want to just give away a car, it wouldn’t match what we do as an organization … The fact that we managed to tie it in with the school and are displaying students’ work is absolutely amazing,” Bush- ell said. Co-ordinator of the School of Transportation Technology Blaine Young also enjoyed this opportuni- ty, as it was an irreplaceable learn- ing experience for the students. “The students restored this ve- hicle back to being a safe vehicle, restoring the body and mechanical systems with new materials and components donated from industry supplies,” Young said in a press re- lease. He says all the students are excit- ed about this project. “It’s a win win situation, we get a vehicle to work on that is fairly up to date and that is usually a financial burden,” Young said. “This way we CREDIT: STUDIO NOSTALGIA got a vehicle, someone to pick up A white 2011 Chevrolet Cruze waits in Z building to be taken home by a lucky Fanshawe student, who will be named October 21, following a series of Fanshawe Student the tab for some of the parts, the Union events. students get the experience and one lucky student gets the car.” be selected October 21 and there is “Every time [a student] goes to the final 15 will arrive at the School and three 100 meal plan dollars on “It was a great project for two of no purchase necessary to earn a bal- an event [he or she] can get anoth- of Transportation Technology in Z campus.” the schools automotive groups (Au- lot into the draw. er key,” Bushell said. “The more building on October 21, where they The final 15 students are only el- tomotive Service and Auto Body) Students will be given a key when students participate [in events] the will be able to select a key for a igible to win the car. … everyone involved is anticipat- they attend FSU events through- more likely they are to win.” locked box.
