As such, the professional appearance of the Department's members is extremely important. Members are expected to always present a neat, professional appearance. Additionally, grooming standards are designed to ensure proper fit and use of all issued equipment to maximize officer safety. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide sworn members with guidelines for jewelry or ornaments and rescinds DGO 10.02 Equipment, section I, F, 5 - Jewelry or Ornaments. Jewelry or Ornaments: • Members may wear and have visible one wristwatch, no more than two rings, a single color black, silver, or gold tie clip, and hair clips or pins that match the color of the hair; all of which must not compromise a member's safety. • Members may wear no more than one ear post or one studded earring in each ear. The front face of each post or stud must lie close to the ear and be plain metal, gold or silver colored with no gem stone, ornament or figurine. The front face of the post or stud is not to have a diameter of more than three-eighths (3/8) inch. Nothing shall hang from the post or stud, either in the front or the back. • Members are prohibited from wearing any other facial jewelry; for example, nose, lip, eyebrow, ear gauge(s) or double holes. Grooming standards apply to uniformed members and to plainclothes members temporarily assigned to a uniformed assignment. Members assigned to SFPD plainclothes units or multi-agency task forces that allow jewelry or ornaments outside these guidelines shall conform to SFPD grooming standards when performing any duties that require wearing the SFPD uniform (EWW, PLES assignments, crowd control squads, etc.) Grooming standard policies cannot be all-inclusive for every situation. It is the responsibility of supervisors at all levels to exercise good judgement when enforcing these standards. The Department will consider and may approve accommodations to this standard on a case by case basis. Such accommodations may be appropriate only in cases where the sworn member demonstrates a religious or medical need for accommodation. Members can contact the Department's Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator at (415) 837-7221 with questions related to the reasonable accommodation process. WILLIAM SCOTT Chief of Police Per DN 20-150, all sworn & non-sworn members shall electronically acknowledge this Department Docwnent in PowerDMS. Members whose duties are relevant to this Document shall be held responsible for compliance. Any questions regarding this policy should be made to sfpd. writtendirectivessfgov. org who will provide additional information. .
