the2 nd EXIIMITION ay AmEwAN EWE RELAjlED OBJECTS Pin—gold and turquoise by RUTH CLARK RADAKOVICH THE HICKOK AWARD AMERICAN JEWELRY AND RELATED OBJECTS The Second National Exhibition Sponsored by the Hickok Company of Rochester, New York Originated by The Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester Circulated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service during 1957 and 1958 Jury of Selection and Award DAVID CAMPBELL, Architect and Executive Vice-President American Craftsmen's Council, New York JOHN PAUL MILLER, Goldsmith and Teacher, The Cleveland Institute of Art DR. GRACE McCANN MORLEY, Director, The San Francisco Museum of Art, — Chairman FOREWORD Jewelry has been a bright reflection of man's social, cultural, and economic life for nearly six thousand years. His vanity, superstition, and practical needs have fashioned amulets, charms, personal adornment, and fastening for his clothing from Stone Age flint bracelets, Greek safety-pins, and Egyptian faience costume jewelry down to modern plastics. Each age has expressed its social structure, its cultural inheritance or borrowing, and technical skills in materials and processes which have remained amazingly changeless — gold, silver, enamel; forging, incising, casting — each in the pattern of its time. The Second Annual Exhibition of Jewelry and Related Objects brings into this long tradition the adornments of our own day. It shows how closely and basically they reflect the characteristic forms of the sculpture, painting, archi- tecture, and technology of Twentieth Century America. It is presented by the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester as a happy alliance with an enlightened industry, the Hickok Company of Rochester, which has sponsored its assembling and given the means of recogniz- ing excelling craftsmanship and distinctive design in a generous offering of prizes and purchase awards. The high state of American creative vitality is here seen in a wide panorama of productive areas across the country. Gertrude H.
