Traffic Services Personnel 1.0 Introduction (1) This Advisory Circular (AC) is provided for information and guidance purposes. It describes an example of an acceptable means, but not the only means, of demonstrating compliance with regulations and standards. This AC on its own does not change, create, amend or permit deviations from regulatory requirements, nor does it establish minimum standards. 1.1 Purpose (1) The purpose of this AC is to provide the entire Canadian aviation community with a glossary of aeronautical terms and definitions used by Canadian pilots, controllers and flight service specialists in order to avoid misunderstandings between them and contribute to the continued efficiency and safety of the air navigation system (ANS). The Glossary serves mainly to highlight the differences between Canadian terminology and definitions, and those from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). 1.2 Applicability (1) This document applies to all Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) employees and to individuals and organizations when they are exercising privileges granted to them under an External Ministerial Delegation of Authority. This information is also available to the aviation industry for information purposes. 1.3 Description of changes (1) This document, formerly AC 100-001, Issue 06, has been reissued as AC 100-001, Issue 07, to reflect the following changes: (a) Editorial and format changes were made throughout the Glossary where necessary and those that were deemed insignificant in nature were not included in this subsection. (b) Section 4.0—Glossary (i) Entries added: aeronautical fixed service (AFS) AFS cockpit voice recorder (CVR) command and control link control station C2 link CVR FDR flight data recorder (FDR) flyaway fly-away forward-looking wind shear warning system [ICAO] GPWS ground proximity warning system (GPWS) 2020-04-09 3 of 198 AC 100-001 Issue 07 Glossary for Pilots and Air Traffic Services Personnel ICAO 3LD ICAO three-letter designator (ICAO 3LD) “Large” [U.S.] light aircraft LL [U.S.] LLWS lost command and control link lost C2 link lost link lost-link procedure low-level wind shear (LLWS) MBST [U.S. and ICAO] medium aircraft microburst obstacle limitation surface (OLS) OLS predictive wind shear alert system (PWS) [U.S.] predictive wind shear system (PWS) PWS rapid-exit taxiway indicator lights (RETIL) reactive wind shear system (RWS) remote pilot station (RPS) [ICAO] RETIL RPAS incursion [Canada] RPS [ICAO] RWS site survey “Small” [U.S.] TAWS terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) terrain awareness warning system (TAWS) 3LD three-letter designator (3LD) VCOA visual climb over airport (VCOA) [U.S.] visual
