The Parish of Thorpe St Andrew Weekly News with Service Sheet Trinity 18 – 11 October: Message from the Rector You’re all invited All societies seem to have a pecking order of who is in and who is out. In Jesus’ time this was particularly true. The Disability Discrimination Act and other pieces of equality legislation would have been laughed off. There were people who lived in the margins of society and, largely at that time, it was felt that this was where they should stay. Jesus makes it clear in another of his parables (as we go through them in Matthew’s Gospel) that the Kingdom of God, which is to come, is not in any way like this. The restrictions put in place (for all our safety) as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic make that a little more difficult to explain. It has been hard to explain to wedding couples that they can only have 30 and now only 15 at their weddings. Imagine the horror of the ‘powers that be’ in the Church of England on reading the fine print of the latest restrictions to discover that baptisms are subject to the ‘Rule of Six’! Yet the invitation into Christian fellowship, whether it be at church, online, on the telephone or in our prayers, is still there. There is no discrimination. All are welcome! Amen. Prayers of Penitence God so loved the world that he gave his only Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, to be our advocate in heaven, and to bring us to eternal life. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, firmly resolved to keep God’s commandments and to live in love and peace with all. Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. Once more Jesus spoke to the people in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.’ But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’ Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.” This is the gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon The Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of Intercession The response to the bidding Lord in your mercy hear our prayer. The Peace Let love be genuine. Never pay back evil for evil. The Preparation of the Table The table is prepared, and bread and wine ae placed upon it. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation: through your goodness we have this bread to set before you, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life.
