For proof of this, we need only look at the names that have earned retrospectives and tributes around the world, as is the case of Joaquim Jordà, and the filmography of disciples such as José Luis Guerin, Marc Recha and Isaki Lacuesta, among others. The sector’s eminence is also manifest in the awards received at the most prestigious international festivals, including the last Joris Ivens Award (the highest honour of the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam), which went out to the Televisió de Catalunya coproduction, Burma VJ-Reporting From a Closed Country; and the SEMINCI selection of three exceptional documentaries: Abel García Roure’s A Certain Truth (Evohé Films, Notro Films); Swimming, by Carla Subirana (Benecé Produccions); and A war in Hollywood, by Oriol Porta (Àrea de Televisió). Indeed, Catalonia’s documentary productions encompass everything from the social portrait to the most creative narrations, in which the camera lens captures some of the most surprising and unknown places, situations and events. In other words, these titles above all catch the viewers’ attention thanks to their innovative treatment of the image, their cadence and the stories they tell. From his refuge Josep Maria PALAU in France, he managed to help with the purchase of weapons for the Republic, in addition to many other adventures. He later travelled to Peru as a UNESCO envoy, where he studied the country’s arid zones, promoted the first archaeological excavations and discovered the world’s deepest canyon.
