Fish, Frogs & Hollow Logs

Fish, Frogs & Hollow Logs Project overview Blakney Creek has been identified as a hot spot for endangered aquatic species in the Lachlan catchment. Threatened / endangered species including Southern Pygmy Perch and Macquarie Perch cohabit in the sub-catchment with the recently found Yellow Spotted Bell Frog (not previously seen in the wild for 30 years). This project will build resilience of endangered aquatic species through the rehabilitation and conservation of suitable habitat which will extend and link isolated populations of species. Incorporation of a planning meeting and the implementation of a monitoring program are also aspects of this project. Focus of the project • protect and restore critical habitat associated with the threatened species • Increase landholder awareness of the threatened species and land Gilgunnia management options to improve habitat Together We’re Making a Difference • monitor the threatened populations LACHLAN CATCHMENT Mount Hope Trundle MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY Ivanhoe Lake Conoble Condobolin Bogan Gate Roto Lachlan River Goobang Creek Willandra Creek Project area Parkes Manildra N Gilgunnia Office Locations Cobb Highway Cudal Eugowra Middle Creek Lake Cargelligo Central OfficeMilthorpe 4-6 Market Street Mount Hope Trundle Canowindra Hillston Forbes Ivanhoe Lake Conoble Lake Cowal BOOROWA LakeCondobolin Brewster 2 Sheriff StreetBlayney Bogan Gate Roto Lachlan River Gooloogong Belubula River NSW 2586 Willandra Creek Goobang Creek Ungarie FORBES NSW 2871 Parkes Manildra Newell Highway N Carcoar Cobb Highway Grenfell Ph: 02 6385 1018 Merrawie Creek Cudal Ph: 02 6851 9500 Eugowra Woodstock Middle Creek Booligal Mid Western Highway Fax: 02 6385 1061 Lake Cargelligo Milthorpe Fax: 02 6851Trunkey 6991 Creek Canowindra Hillston ForbesWest Wyalong Cowra Abercrombie River Lake Cowal Lake Lake Brewster Blayney Wyangala Gooloogong Belubula River Koorowatha Ungarie Crookwell River Bigga Newell Highway Carcoar GrenfellBarmedman Merrawie Creek 7 Hay Street 30 Lynch Street Woodstock Grogan Fullerton Booligal Mid Western Highway Trunkey Creek Boorowa River West Wyalong Cowra Abercrombie River Lake CONDOBOLIN COWRA Wyangala Koorowatha Crookwell River Bigga Young NSW 2877 NSW 2794 Barmedman Temora Crookwell Grogan Fullerton Boorowa River Boorowa Ph: 02 6895 1110Grabben GullenPh: 02 6341 1600 Stockinbingal Young Fax: 02 6895 3406 Fax: 02 6342 2565 Temora Crookwell Boorowa Grabben Gullen Legend Stockinbingal Gunning Legend Lachlan CMA Boundary CMA Office 20 Warraderry Street 168 High St, Lachlan CMA BoundaryTown (5000 - 9999)CMA Office Highway Gunning GRENFELL HILLSTON Town (5000 - 9999) Highway Town (1000 - 4999) Lake/Dam NSW 2810 NSW 2675 Town (1000 - 4999) Lake/Dam 0 50 100 200 Town (200 - 999) Major River/Creek 0 50 100 200 Town (200 - 999) Major River/Creek Ph: 02 6349 1200 Ph: 02 6967 2897 Town (Under 200)Town (Under 200) Kilometres Kilometres Fax: 02 6343 2366 Fax: 02 6967 2998 Cnr Court & 280 Hoskins Street Currajong Street TEMORA Top image: Silver Perch PARKES NSW 2870 NSW 2666 Ph: 02 6816 3200 Ph: 02 6977 4790 Fax: 02 6862 5254 Fax: 02 6977 4791 31-33 Main Street Cnr Lynch & Lovell St WEST WYALONG YOUNG NSW 2594 NSW 2671 Ph: 02 6382 5833 Ph: 02 6972 2831 Fax: 02 6382 2134 Fax: 02 6972 3356 www.lachlan.cma.nsw.gov.au C_2011_003 Threatened species What is being done? Direct in-stream habitat improvement (both quality and quantity) will be derived from the delivery of: • on-ground works such as riparian revegetation with direct seeding and tubestock • protection of existing remnants with fencing and understorey enhancement • stock removal from streams with watering points provided and • invasive species control Image: Macquarie perch On-ground works will be delivered through incentive The focus of this project is to improve habitat for the payments to landholders and coordinated volunteer following nationally threatened species: activities. • Yellow Spotted Bell Frog • Southern Bell Frog • Southern Pygmy Perch • Macquarie Perch • Booroolong Frog • Silver Perch • River Blackfish • Murray Cod • Freshwater Catfish • Trout Cod • Notopala sublineata (water snail) Critical threats to the long term survival of this Image: Yellow spotted bell frog community of threatened aquatic species include loss of in-stream habitat, inappropriate herbicide use, Funding for this project stock access to waterways, lack of functioning riparian This project has been funded by the Australian vegetative filter strips, and habitat fragmentation.
