The Cathedral Church

The Eucharist Patronal Festival - St Peter 28 June 2020 10.15 Welcome to Bradford Cathedral The seat of the Bishop of Leeds and a Centre of Worship and Mission One of three Cathedrals in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds Our purpose is to serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield. ❖ Please join in at home, by saying or singing the words in bold type in this order of service. ❖ This is a service of Holy Communion. The term ‘Spiritual Communion’ has been used historically to describe the means of grace by which a person, prevented for some serious reason from sharing in a celebration of the Eucharist, nonetheless shares in the communion of Jesus Christ. The Church of which we are members is not defined by the walls of a building but by the Body of Christ of which we are members. In making our communion spiritually, we are joining with Christians everywhere to be nourished by the one who tells us, ‘I am the Bread of Life’. ❖ You may wish to use the following prayer, after Richard of Chichester: Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have given me, for all the pains and insults you have borne for me. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother, may I know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. ❖ Members of the Music Department and Cathedral Choir lead this morning’s worship. The choral settings are Jonathan Dove’s Missa Brevis and Alex Berry’s Missa sub clavis. HOSPITALITY . FAITHFULNESS . WHOLENESS [email protected] Bradford Cathedral, Stott Hill, Bradford, BD1 4EH www.bradfordcathedral.org T: 01274 777720 2 Voluntary: Plein Jeu (Gloria, 1st verse) from Mass for the Convents by F. Couperin. Played by Graham Thorpe. Welcome and Notices The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford Hymn We love the place, O God, wherein thine honour dwells; the joy of thine abode all earthly joys excels. We love the house of prayer, wherein thy servants meet; and thou, O Lord, art there thy chosen flock to greet. We love the sacred font; for there the holy Dove to pour is ever wont his blessing from above. We love thine altar, Lord; O what on earth so dear? for there, in faith adored, we find thy presence near. We love the word of life, the word that tells of peace, of comfort in the strife, and joys that never cease. We love to sing below for mercies freely given; but O we long to know the triumph-song of heaven. Lord Jesus, give us grace on earth to love thee more, in heaven to see thy face, and with thy saints adore. Words: William Bullock (1798-1874) & H.W. Baker (1821-1877) Tune: QUAM DILECTA; CP 211 3 Greeting Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you. Come, Holy Spirit Fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in us the fire of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Prayers of Penitence Jesus said to his apostles, ‘You are my friends if you obey my commands.’ John 15:14 Let us now confess our disobedience to him. Silence Lord Jesus, in your love you invite us to be your friends: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, in your joy you choose us to go out and bear fruit: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, in your power you send us to be your faithful witnesses: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. God, the Father of mercies, has reconciled the world to himself through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ, not counting our sins against us, but sending his Holy Spirit to shed abroad his love among us. By the ministry of reconciliation entrusted by Christ to his Church, receive his pardon and peace to stand before him in his strength alone, this day and evermore. Amen. 4 Gloria in Excelsis Choir: Gloria in excelsis deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te, gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam, Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. Amen. Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Setting: Jonathan Dove, Missa Brevis The president introduces a period of silent prayer Prayer of the day Almighty God, who inspired your apostle Saint Peter to confess Jesus as Christ and Son of the living God: build up your Church upon this rock, that in unity and peace it may proclaim one truth and follow one Lord, your Son our Saviour Christ. Amen. New Testament Reading 1 Peter 2.19-end read by Susan Ibnouzaki For it is to your credit if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. 20If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, where is the credit in that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God’s approval. 21For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. 22 ‘He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.’ 23When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. 5 This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence Gradual How beauteous are their feet, who stand on Zion’s hill, Who bring salvation with their tongues, and words of peace instil! How happy are our ears that hear this joyful sound, Which kings and prophets waited for, and sought, but never found! How blessed are our eyes that see this heav’nly light! Prophets and kings desired it long, but died without the sight. The Lord makes bare His arm, through all the earth abroad; Let ev’ry nation now behold their saviour and their God. Words: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) Music: C.V. Stanford (1852-1924) Gospel Reading Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, one God, who was, and who is, and who is to come, the Almighty. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord Matthew 16.13-19 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ 14And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ 15He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ 16Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ 17And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.’ 6 This is the Gospel of the Lord.
