This tour has been crafted for curious travelers who want to eat and drink like the locals do in this beautiful, rural and coastal corner of Southern Italy. Guests wake up to clear views of the Tyrrhenian Sea from their own private terrace. They walk the ruins of the majestic Greek temples at Paestum with an art historian, then experience the architecture of Zaha Hadid in Salerno. Every day of this 7-night/8-day tour has been designed to reveal the underpinnings of this culturally rich region. F E A S T O N H I S T O R Y . C O M | 9 1 7 - 8 8 1 - 3 9 1 8 Day 1: Welcome to Borgo La Pietraia We'll pick you up in Rome at noon and then drive you to the beautiful Cilento countryside. Unpack and unwind for the afternoon. Your home for the entire week is Borgo La Pietraia, a collaboration between renowned Italian architect Nicola Pagliara and the Scariati family. All rooms have fully modern amenities and a private terrace with a sweeping view of the Tyrrhenian Sea and Capri. We'll have a wine tasting before dinner and then a celebratory feast of typical Cilento ingredients given a fine dining touch. Day 2: Tenuta Vannulo and San Salvatore '88 Vineyard Visit Vannulo, Italy's single best producer of buffalo mozzarella then visit San Salvatore vineyard and tasting room. We'll have an elegant lunch made from the organic products grown on the farm to support biodiversity accompanied by a full wine tasting led by a sommelier. Before returning to the Borgo for an early evening, we'll watch the sunset from the beaches at Paestum. Day 3: Cilento Coast Explore the fishing towns along the Cilento coast including and the medieval village of Castellabate, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Acciaroli where Hemingway met his inspiration for "The Old Man and the Sea." Acciaroli has been in the news recently as scientists have been studying the rosemary on the Cilento coast which may account for the extraordinary health and longevity of the locals. W W W . C O M | 9 1 7 - 8 8 1 - 3 9 1 8 Day 4: Cook With A Baronessa Meet the Baronessa Cecilia Baratta Bellelli who will lead us through a 5-course cooking class of regional specialities on her family estate and farm. Learn to make handmade ravioli, Neapolitan style pizza in a wood fired oven and torta caprese, a very regional cake made with chocolate and almond flour. Afterward we'll eat lunch in the Baronessa's dining room filled with antiques and relax on her terrace and gardens. Day 5: Amalfi-by-Sea In the morning we'll drive to Salerno to see the extraordinary new ferry terminal designed by architect Zaha Hadid. We'll have a front row seat to the Amalfi coast as we travel by boat to the town of Amalfi. After a day exploring the Norman-Arab cathedral and the famous pastry shop Andrea Pansa, we'll return to Salerno by ferry and then have dinner at a very special family-run trattoria in Vietri sul Mare. Day 6: Cilento National Park We'll cross through the Cilento National Park to reach the Angel Caves at Pertosa where we'll explore the grottoes and canyons carved by an underground river described in Greek mythology, Then we'll visit San Lorenzo di Padula, the largest medieval monastery in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Day 7: Paestum temples See the ancient temples at Paestum including a private tour of the storage vaults led by the museum's director. Spend time on your own exploring the ruins and the museum. After a light lunch near the ruins, return to the Borgo for a free afternoon before a celebratory last dinner. Day 8: Arrivederci After breakfast, we'll stop at the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Pomegranate, a 9th century church with a panoramic view of the Cilento. We depart for Rome at 10am. W W W . Past guests include singles, couples, adult children traveling with parents, couples celebrating anniversaries. Guests have ranged from 24-80 years of age. Our small groups of no more than 14 people allow for people to get to know each other. -You want to get off the proverbial beaten path and go where the Italians go. -You want an authentic experience of Italian life, but also really want to enjoy being away from home and work. We let you sleep late and craft each day to have a nice balance of relaxing and sightseeing. -You don't speak Italian, but would still like to get to know real Italians. You're in the care of our Italian family who will treat you as family. -You don't want to deal with driving or train schedules. We have our own driver for the week so you don't have to worry about figuring out how to get to all these off-the-beaten path places or drive along mountain or coastal roads. -You want to eat and drink the very best, most local thing in every place you go, but don't have the time to spend months researching food blogs to figure it all out. We pick the places and select the best of what is most characteristic of the place, the freshest, in- season or the specialty of the house. Where other tour operators in the region accept between 20-40 guests per tour, our groups accept a maximum of 14 guests. In collaboration with renowned architect Nicola Pagliara, the Scariati family created this modern agriturismo to look like a small village. Above all, the Scariatis, who have lived in Capaccio for centuries, want to share the beauty of the Cilento countryside and the bright blue horizon overlooking the Tyrrhenian sea. Borgo La Pietraia enjoys a majestic panorama of mountains and sea stretching from the Sorrento peninsula to the Cilento coast. The buildings and terraces are all built from local stone, making the property feel as though it grows organically from the landscape, in complete harmony with nature. It is a true paradise insulated with pomegranate and olive trees and scented by hedges of bay leaves, rosemary and other Mediterranean herbs and flowers.
