Proverbs 9:9 To all those who have transitioned to be with our Lord before completion of this my academic milestone, I know you would be proud of me... I honor and love you each in very special ways: Mary Jo Brooks Pauline "Grand" & Willie "Grand-dad" Daniels Inez "Nana" Waddell ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS 1. Praise the Lord for Your living Word -- 2 Corinthians 12:9 "And He said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness…” Indeed, when I was weak You made me strong! 2. Husband, Ken - thank you for loving support in word & deed; longsuffering through my various states of physical, mental & emotional absence; caring for our three girls with dinner & running them to their weekly extracurricular activities; keeping me in the latest of technologies at home and on-the-run (several desktops & laptops computers; various mobile devices--tablets, smartphone, myFi, etc.; multiple accessories & peripherals-- headphones, clickers, microphones, wireless networks, external storage, etc.) so as to support my every endeavor. Special thanks for all that was not sexy but bespoke of your commitment to provide for as long as we both shall live (e.g., the various sets of new tires to keep me safe on the roads). Ken, thanks for laughs too! I love you, respect you, and will cherish you forever! 3. Daughters, Kendal, Kennedy and McKenzie - thank you ladies for demonstrating your support with patience, responsibility, loving words & deeds 4. My parents, John and Mary Brooks - thank you both for instilling in me rich cultural capital, spiritual grounding, and encouragement. 5. My brothers Craig & Jomar - thank you both for propelling me to higher levels of achievement as your big sister. I hope I make you proud as I'm proud of you two! 6. COE IT Department gatekeeper, IT Program Secretary: Michele Norris - thank you for pulling me aside years ago and encouraging to consider the doctoral program & for keeping me informed and organized throughout the process at the WSU level. iii 7. The men and women of the Finishline Doctoral Support Group - your encouragement have given me wings. Thank you Dr. Winfred Robinson for inviting me to this inspired support group for the African American doctoral student. Special thanks to Dr. Cynthia Ward for initially embracing me within this group and encouraging me to fulfill this journey not just for myself, but for those who'll come after me. 8. Dr. Alexander Bailey - thank you for your personal contributions in affording me with rich professional teaching and learning experiences towards earning my Masters degree in Special Education; for stimulating reflective conversations around African-American culture and education; and, for demonstrating love in action towards my husband and daughters year after year. 9. Finishline Doctoral Study Buddies: Christina, Naimah, Michelle and Akena - thanks for the hours, months and years of academic, social and emotional support 'thru it all'! 10. Dissertation Committee Members, Dr. Tracey, Dr. Guerra-Lopez, Dr. Spannaus, and Dr. Smith - thank you for your scholarly insights, your time and attention to guiding and encouraging my research study. Special thanks to Dr. Tracey for the transformative experiences and opportunities you've challenged me to accomplish both professionally and academically. 11. Special thanks, blessings and love to my family at large nationwide; to a host of divinely appointed friends, prayer warriors; and, to well-wishers from my distant past up unto my most recent present. Truly, as Proverbs 27:17 proclaims, “As one piece of iron sharpens another, so friends keep each other sharp." ~ I appreciate you all! ~ iv TABLE OF CONTENTS Dedication ..................................................................................................................................... ii Acknowledgements ...................................................................................................................... iii List of Tables ................................................................................................................................ x List of Figures .............................................................................................................................. xi Chapter 1 Introduction .................................................................................................................. 1 Statement of the Problem .................................................................................................. 2 Purpose and Research Questions ...................................................................................... 4 Theoretical Constructs ...................................................................................................... 5 Epistemology .................................................................................................................... 6 Definitions and Key Terms ............................................................................................... 6 21st Century skills ................................................................................................ 7 Collaboration technology ..................................................................................... 7.
