Malesic Bishop of Cleveland This week, the Church celebrates Pope Saint Gregory VII. He was born in the Italian region of Tuscany around AD 1020 and named Hildebrand by his Most Reverend Anthony M. Pilla, Bishop Emeritus parents (Gregory was the name he took after becoming Pope). Gregory lived during Most Rev. Roger W. Gries, OSB, Aux. Bishop, Retired a dark period the Church’s history. During the 10th and early 11th century, the papacy was controlled by various affluent and influential Italian families, who Cathedral Staff sought to place members of their households on the papal throne, for less than Rev. Sean Ralph, Rector noble ambitions. This allowed a number of corruptions to creep into the life of the [email protected] Church. Rev. Arnel A. Lagman, Parochial Vicar [email protected] Gregory’s father was a carpenter or perhaps a peasant farmer (historical records Deacon John P. Sferry, Deacon, Retired aren’t precisely clear on this point), and his uncle was the abbot of a monastery in [email protected] Rome. As a child, the future Saint was sent to study at the monastery school, where Deacon Matt Lawler, Deacon he learned discipline and developed a prayer life that drew him into deep intimacy [email protected] with God. After completing his schooling, he entered religious life and became a Carolyn Apperson, Parish Catechetical Leader monk. As one of his official monastic duties, he served as a chaplain to his mentor, [email protected] Pope Gregory VI (after his election), but this did not last long, as Gregory VI had a Gregory Heislman, Music Director & Organist short and turbulent reign and ultimately resigned. After Gregory VI’s death in AD [email protected] 1047, Gregory spent some time at the monastery in Cluny, and around AD 1049, Joseph Petros, Organist he met Bruno of Toul, who later became Pope Leo IX. In Residence The new Pope put Gregory in charge of one of the historic monasteries, where Rev. Donald P. Oleksiak he remained until he was called to serve as Papal Legate and special advisor to [email protected] Leo IX. After Leo’s death, Gregory was seen as the logical successor, but he did Rev. John E. Manning not want to be Pope, and so he continued to serve as a respected member of the [email protected] College of Cardinals during the reigns of the next several Popes. In AD 1073, Rev. Daniel F. Schlegel however, Gregory was elected Pope and immediately set about what has become [email protected] known as the ‘Gregorian Reform’. He faced a giant mess in the Church that needed Our Cathedral Mission is to provide all to be fixed: simony was rampant (the buying and selling of church offices); unlawful people with access to the saving love of God through marriage of the clergy (clerical celibacy was in force at this time); lay investiture Word, Sacraments, and a community of justice and (civil officials were naming people to Church offices and investing them with the love, that empowered by the Holy Spirit, we might symbols of that office); and a schism between Rome and Constantinople (this is all become beloved disciples of Jesus Christ, living where we get the Orthodox church). and inviting others to a holy and abundant life. In AD 1074, he issued sweeping reforms that met with widespread opposition Cathedral Parish Membership (no one likes a reformer), but Gregory held his ground as Vicar of Christ and May: 1,135 households, 1,847 individuals visible sign of the Church’s unity (both aspects of his office that he stressed).
