On behalf of our faculty, staff and students, we extend our best wishes to you and your families during these challenging times. As many of you know, the Government has provided guidance to close universities to traditional, face-to-face instruction through December 2020. As a result, we will be maintaining online instruction for the remainder of the Summer and Fall terms. While this has seriously disrupted the higher education plans for many students, I am pleased to report that our transition to online learning has, thus far, been very successful. We are the only Indonesian university using Canvas, the leading learning management system (LMS) in the world. Our faculty and students benefit from using this LMS---the same one used at top universities such as Harvard, Stanford, Oxford and Cambridge. And, the hard work of our faculty to produce engaging online courses really paid off! Dr. Marshall E. Schott Student attendance was recorded at 96% President of Sampoerna University and average GPA differentials showed no significant difference from the same courses offered in a face-to-face format. The current situation has forced many Indonesian students to forego attending university next academic year. Still others are contemplating taking a “gap year” that will delay their studies and graduation. We are very grateful that this is not the case at SU. Indeed, we expect to see a record number of transfer students from the US when classes resume in August 2020. As always, we appreciate your interest and support for Sampoerna University. SU . NEWSLETTER . JULY . 2020 1 STUDENT AFFAIRS Since May 2020, Sampoerna University Student Affairs has held several events as follows ONLINE JOB INTERVIEW SIMULATION To improve students’ interview performance, SU Student Affairs conducted an Online Job Interview Practice for 11 days from Thursday, 16 April 2020 to Friday, 8 May 2020. It was held virtually on Microsoft Teams. In the simulation, the students practiced a one-on-one online job interview simulation with our invited business practitioner, Mr. Pierre Alexander as Career Coach, Ms. Jasmine Kharissa as Recruitment Consultant and also Ms. Ayu Resky Oktavianti as HRBP Manager at Sampoerna University. All of the students received feedback on how to improve their performance for their next real job interviews. Fifty-five (55) students joined this simulation session enthusiastically to ace their job placement process. Each of them was given 45 minutes for interview practice and review discussion on their CV, interview and career choice. The simulation aimed to prepare all SU students for the kind of job placement they will experience. In addition, this simulation allowed students to be more aware of common mistakes made by candidates during the recruitment processes. SU . NEWSLETTER . JULY . 2020 2 CAREER PREPARATION WORKSHOP In order to prepare our graduates for the challenging job market, Student Affairs held “Introducing Career Preparation and Culture in FMCG (A Career Preparation Workshop)” on Friday, May 15th, 2020 in collaboration with Mondelez Indonesia. The event was held virtually on Microsoft Teams, starting from 09.30 am to 11.30 am. During this session, the attending students learned directly from HR expert Nadiasari Wahyuhardini (HR Business Lead at Mondelez Indonesia). They found out that employers are looking for qualities beyond academic qualifications, such as being “a good fit” and being able to adapt to a company lifestyle. Academic achievements are necessary, but employers consider other non-academic aspects as well before recruiting. After the event, the students learned more about career opportunities and how to prepare for certain industries. In particular, they learned what skills/attributes are valued by recruiters in FMCG companies. They also learned about the intense, fast-paced work culture at many FMCG’s. By attending this event, SU students will be even better prepared for internships and job placement. In addition, this session allowed students to learn more about what they should prepare for after graduation and the kind of careers in which they might have an interest. There were 102 students who attended the sessions. SU . NEWSLETTER .
