The A Weekly Look at the Cottey College Campus Chronicle volume XXXII, number 18, January 12, 2018 Highlights MLK Day of Service The birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was marked as a federal holiday in 1983, and in 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community." Cottey will mark this day of service on Monday, January 15, 2018, with the following events (more details forthcoming!) These events are open to all faculty, staff and students. Please consider participating and offering attendance to the events as an alternative/extra credit assignment for your students if you are teaching a class. Hall, Pope Suite Mickala Terry Commuter Student Autumn Warren Rice Commuter Student Class Cancellations or College Closures Winter is here, which means that snow and ice may soon arrive; thus, we wanted to share the procedures that the College will follow in the event that classes are cancelled or scheduled to begin late or the College is closed. The decision to cancel classes for the entire day or start late will be made typically between 6:00-6:30 a.m. The College will send announcements via the ENS (Emergency Notification System)**, text/voice messages, and emails, and on answering systems for any number provided to the College for that purpose. If need be, please update your emergency information online at www.cottey.edu/emergency-enroll-instructions. Public Information will put announcements on area TV/radio stations and on the website. If it becomes necessary to cancel classes for any reason after the class day has begun, the same process will be followed. Our best advice for students, staff, and faculty is to check the College website and text/email. **To receive messages from the ENS, the recipients must first input correct cell numbers into the emergency information site at www.cottey.edu/emergency-enroll-instructions. Faculty Recital Campus Events Sunday, January 21 @ 3 p.m. Missouri Recital Hall Join us for this collaborative recital featuring music Tickets: Riders in the Sky and dance faculty members, Jo Byrnes, Amanda Cook, Debbie Fast, Peggy Graves, Theresa Spencer, and Jenna Wurtzberger. Featuring dance, vocal Tickets are now available for the Riders in the Sky music, the piano and clarinet, faculty members will performance on Saturday, January 27. In answer to several people’s questions, Riders in the Sky Children's Dance Classes performed on campus in April 2001. The Cottey College Dance Department is offering dance classes for children January 23-February Pre-Ballet/ Tuesdays, 6 - 6:45 p.m. 15. The classes will be held in the Rogers Fine Arts Creative Movement (ages 4-6) Building, and parking is available in lots on Cherry Jazz Plus (ages 7-9) Thursdays, 6 - 6:45 p.m. Street. Faculty & Staff Faculty Notes Congratulations to Dr. Angela Firkus, professor of history, on receiving the 2018 Center for Missouri Studies fellowship, an educational outreach program of the State Historical Society. Dr. Firkus will be exploring Kansas City’s child labor laws during the Progressive Era. The Center for Missouri Studies promotes scholarship in underexplored fields of Missouri history and culture. Dr. Firkus will hold her appointment for the 2018 calendar year during which she will write a scholarly essay for possible publication in the Missouri Historical Review and make a public presentation of her work. Prof. Jo Byrnes, associate professor of dance, was a guest artist at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri, January 5-6. She set a piece of choreography on the college’s Repertory Dance Company. January 12-14, the director of dance from Missouri Valley College, associate professor of dance Janie Morgan, will be on the Cottey campus to set a piece of choreography on the Cottey-in-Motion Dance Company. This choreography “swap” is in celebration of the articulation agreement being worked out between Cottey and Missouri Valley for dance majors. Students who complete the AFA degree in dance at Cottey will be able to transfer to Missouri Valley easily to complete a four-year dance degree. Dr. Julie Tietz, professor of psychology, attended the annual conference of the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology, January 3-6, 2018, at St. Pete Beach, Florida. This conference provides lots of opportunities for learning about new and better ways, supported by research, to teach and inspire students. Dr. Tietz's conference attendance was made possible by the award money from the Class of 1960 Excellence in Education Award. Welcome, New Staff! The Business Office is pleased to welcome Carla Gilbert as the new Controller in their office. Carla brings a wealth of knowledge to Cottey after serving for over 36 years at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Springs, most recently as the Director of Finance. Please join us in welcoming Carla to the Cottey community! In December, Paula Dombroski joined the Institutional Advancement team as Coordinator of Advancement Research and Reporting. Paula received her bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science from Murray State University and earned master’s degrees in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Murray State University and in Intercultural Ministry from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. Her teaching and administrative experience includes stints at Ohio University, University of Texas at Arlington, and Murray State University, as well as the David English House in Hiroshima, Japan, and the Shinpoong Elementary School in Suwon, South Korea. She also spent three years doing volunteer work in administration, agriculture, and ethnographic research in the Philippines and Myanmar. Welcome, Paula! Wish List Update Thanks to a very generous P.E.O. and 2017 Vacation College guest – these two photos will soon have a very different look. Judy Elkins of Las Vegas, Nevada, has provided funds for a banner to span the length of the backfield fence of the Vanek Softball Field reading, “Home of the Comets.” The gift also includes funds for Student Health Services that will provide $2,500 in new equipment for the exam room.
