As you read this, the holidays will be behind us, life should be a little more tranquil and quiet, and we should be having time to reflect upon the new year and all the hopes and promises with which it comes. (Of course, as I write this, a few weeks before the newsletter will be printed, the holidays loom large and I am thinking of all the many things I have to do in the next week shopping, wrapping, packing, traveling, baking, etc. and wondering if the time of peace and quiet will really ever arrive!) But, this is a wonderful opportunity for us to take a moment or two to think about how we want Athena to grow and to change in the future. The Athena Board of Directors has discussed this on occasion, and many of us have talked among ourselves in small groups and also in larger forums (such as at the last retreat) about the changes we would like to see in areas such as membership. Along those lines, we will be forming an ad hoc committee to discuss the direction in which Athena wishes to go; some of you have already volunteered to serve on this committee, and I will be calling upon you shortly to organize as a committee and to formulate SOlne recommendations to pass along to the Board of Directors. If anyone who has not already volunteered would like to serve on this committee, please contact me or Eleanor and we'll add you to the committee. I I Happy holidays to everyone, I and I hope that you I have a happy and healthy 2008! President’s Message As each month rolls by and I realize that it’s time for me to write yet another message for the newsletter, it occurs to me how quickly this Athena year is passing. It is so rewarding to get feedback from you on things you like – and, yes, even on things with which you disagree. I need not tell any of you this, of course, but we – as a group – are very outspoken and direct, but it’s why we are such a vital, productive organization. Everyone does more than just express an opinion; they also offer to help to improve upon the things they think are less than perfect. Thank you for your input, your feedback and your determination. We’ve had many fun times of late with our fellow Athenians: the Athena Bonus presentation at Alfonso Architects, the Gorilla Theatre outing for Jane Eyre directed by Nancy Cole, the backstage tour and Rockettes performance on the evening of our December meeting and the Athena Bonus cooking demonstration by Denise Chavez. We are most appreciative of your help in putting together these events and your attendance at them. We have a busy time approaching – nominations of potential new members, the Young Women of Promise program, the giving of the Level Playing Field awards and career assistance grants and more. I look forward to seeing you at each of these events. Calendar February 14 – Deadline for membership nomination forms March 6 – Luncheon – Centre Club March 22 – Athena Bonus – USF Botanical Gardens April 3 – Young Women of Promise Luncheon – Centre Club May 1 – Presentation of Career Assistance Grants June 5 – Dinner – Installation of 2008-09 Board www.athena-society.com Athena Bonus Wine lovers and nature lovers unite….and plan to attend the Bonus set for Sunday, February 24, at the Keel & Curley Winery in Plant City.
