Statistical release P5041.3 Building statistics 2001 Co-operation between Statistics South Africa (Stats Embargo: 11:00 SA), the citizens of the country, the private sector and government institutions is essential for a Date: 2 September 2002 successful statistical system. Without continued co- operation and goodwill, the timely release of relevant and reliable official statistics will not be possible. Stats SA publishes approximately three hundred different releases each year. It is not economically viable to produce them in more than one of South Africa’s eleven official languages. Since the releases are used extensively, not only locally, but also by international economic and social-scientific communities, Stats SA releases are published in English only. 1 P5041.3 Key findings regarding building plans passed for the year ended 2001 Provincial statistics regarding building plans passed according to type of building The total value of building plans passed during 2001 for the private sector amounted to R19 582,2 million. The highest contribution to the total value of building plans passed was reported for residential buildings (54,3% or R10 625,7 million), followed by additions and alterations (28,2% or R5 520,4 million) and non-residential buildings (17,5% or R3 436,1 million). The largest provincial contributor to the total value of building plans passed was Gauteng (contributing 41,2% or R8 066,4 million to the total value of building plans passed), followed by Western Cape (28,9% or R5 658,4 million) and KwaZulu-Natal (12,2% or R2 386,2 million) (cf. table A). The total value of building plans passed as reported by the other six provinces amounted to R3 471,3 million, therefore contributing only 17,7% to the total value of building plans passed during 2001. In Western Cape the highest contribution to the total value of building plans passed was reported by City of Cape Town – Cape Town Administration (14,0% or R793,6 million), Blaauwberg Administration (13,3% or R751,3 million) and South Peninsula Administration – Plumstead Area (8,2% or R463,9 million) (cf. table 9, p.32). In KwaZulu-Natal the highest contribution to the total value of building plans passed as reported by Durban (21,9% or R521,8 million), followed by North Operational Entity – Umhlanga Rocks (21,8% or R519,2 million) and Msunduzi Municipality –Pietermaritzburg Area (9,4% or R224,0 million) (cf. table 41, p.72). 2 P5041.3 Residential building plans passed The total value of residential building plans passed during 2001 amounted to R10 625,7 million, which represents 54,3% of the total value of building plans passed (R19 582,2 million). The largest provincial contributors to the total value of residential building plans passed were Gauteng (43,4% or R4 613,5 million) and Western Cape (28,6% or R3 042,4 million) (cf. table B). The highest contribution regarding the value of type of building to the total value of residential building plans passed was reported for dwelling-houses (75,4% or R8 014,2 million), followed by flats and townhouses (19,9% or R2 117,3 million) and ‘other’ residential buildings (4,7% or R494,2 million). Large provincial contributors to the total value of dwelling-house plans passed were Gauteng (42,6% or R3 412,8 million) and Western Cape (31,6% or R2 531,9 million) (cf. table B). The largest value regarding dwelling-house plans passed in Gauteng was reported by City of Johannesburg (R1 162,0 million), followed by City of Tshwane – City Council of Pretoria (R563,6 million) and City of Tshwane – Centurion Town Council (R416,9 million) (cf. table 59, p. 100). The largest contributors to the total value of dwelling-house plans passed in Western Cape were City of Cape Town – Blaauwberg Administration (R424,7 million), City of Cape Town - Helderberg Administration (R221,9 million), Mossel Bay Municipality (R182,3 million) and South Peninsula Administration – Plumstead Area (R177,9 million) (cf. table 11, p.36). 3 P5041.3 Building plans passed for flats and townhouses The total value of building plans passed for flats and townhouses during 2001 amounted to R2 117,3 million. The largest provincial contributor to the total value of building plans passed for flats and townhouses was Gauteng (55,7% or R1 178,7 million), Western Cape (20,1% or R425,6 million) and KwaZulu-Natal (9,6% or R204,2 million) (cf. table B). The highest values regarding building plans passed for flats and townhouses in Gauteng were reported by City of Johannesburg (R458,5 million), City of Tshwane – City Council of Pretoria (R318,7 million) and Centurion Town Council (R261,3 million) (cf. table 60, p.102). The largest contributor to the total value of building plans passed for flats and townhouses in Western Cape was City of Cape Town – Durbanville Administration (R161,0 million), followed by Oostenberg Administration – Brackenfell (R53,8 million) and Blaauwberg Administration (R34,9 million) (cf. table 12, p.38). ‘Other’ residential building plans passed The total value of ‘other’ residential building plans passed during 2001 amounted to R494,2 million. The largest provincial contributor to the total value of ‘other’ residential building plans passed was Limpopo (42,0% or R207,6 million), mainly due to the approval of building plans for a hotel and casino by Polokwane Municipality (R207,5 million) (cf.table 77, p.124), followed by Western Cape (17,2% or R84,9 million), KwaZulu-Natal (16,7% or R82,6 million) and Eastern Cape (15,9% or R78,7 million) (cf.table B).
