LeRoy Shields HISTORICAL 1934—Hoosick Farts Directory—1934 HOOSICK FALL LOCATION—Hoosick Falls is located in the rolling country 25 miles east of the Hudson River. It lies mostly on the north bank of the Hoosick River and derives its name from the falls of the river at this point. It is 26 miles to Troy, 33 to Albany, 41 to Schenectady, 23 to North Adams, 60 to Greenfield, 165 to Boston, 14 to Bennington 63 to Rutland, 121 to Burlington, 170 to New York. Hoosick Falls is rich in historiclore. A few miles to the east is the site of the famous Battle of Bennington. The Indian tribes traversed this country on their way to and from the Hudson River. INDUSTRIAL—Hoosick has had a famous history industrially, here the great Walter Wood Mower and Reaper Machine plant was located and the decline of this industry was a hard blow. However, Hoosick Falls is recovering and now is entering upon the most vigor- ous industrial era of its history. There are some fine old substantial industries making paper, paper making machinery, underwear, sweaters, shirts and collars, cigars, dresses, heaters, iron and brass castings, metal stampings, paper boxes, carbonated beverages, brushes, dairy products, furnaces, agricultural machinery parts, fadio equipment, lumber, grain products. A number of new in- dustries have come to Hoosick Falls in the past few years making a variety of products that promises to substantially increase the in- dustrial prestige of Hoosick Falls within the next few years. The Hoosick River furnishes a good power here. MISCELLANEOUS—The population covered by this Directory which is contiguous to Hoosick Falls is 12,883. Hoosick Falls town- ship had a population in 1920 of 6,858. In 1925 it had increased to 7,262 so that evidently it reached bottom in its decline in 1920 and is at the present time growing. Hoosick Falls is well paved and issued bonds for $400,000 to do the work. There are good schools: 6 public schools in Hoosick Falls proper and an equal number in balance of township; there are 3 parochial schools and 1 private school. There are 15 churches. It is on the main line of the Boston & Maine Rail- road with stations at Hoosick Falls, Hoosick, Hoosick Junction, East Buskirk, and Eagle Bridge; the Rutland Railroad has stations at Hoosick Junction, North Hoosick and Walloomsac; the Delaware & Hudson has a station at Eagle Bridge. The Hoosick Falls & Ben- nington Street Railway has been abandoned. ADVANTAGES—Hoosick Falls offers splendid opportunities for residence and business. With its well paved streets, plenty of natural building room, beautiful terrain, three railroads within the township, a good outlying territory for agriculture and trade, water power, remoteness from other trading centers, good banking facilities a well balanced industrial structure, an alert citizenship looking for new industries and with progressive ideas, it is decidedly on the up- grade.
