The assessment consisted of a desk based consultation of primary archaeological sources and a site visit. The purpose of the desk‐based assessment is to identify heritage assets within a 0.5km radius of the proposed development site boundary. Those assets within the site are identified and the possible impact of development upon the heritage assets is considered. In addition the potential impact of any development upon the setting of any designated heritage assets within the study area is also considered. Twenty assets were identified within the study area of which one within the proposed development site boundary. The assets within the site boundary are all of local significance only. The proposed development site is adjacent to the putative Lake District World Heritage Site, the UK’s nominee for 2017. The proposed development may impact upon the setting of the proposed Lake District World Heritage Site but it would not significantly compromise its Outstanding Universal Values (OUV). The proposed development would be partially intervisible with the Greenside Lime Kilns scheduled monument but would have a negligible impact upon its heritage significance.
