Welcome Message On behalf of District 19, I would like to welcome you all to the 46th NAMBA Naonals. I would like to thank our district members for their assistance in hosng this week‐long event at Sunset Park in Las Vegas, Nevada. District 19 has decided to do something a lile different with this year’s naonals. We started by moving the Naonals to the month of October and then we included all three power disciplines ‐ Nitro, Fast Electric and Gas. We are excited to have over 500 boats entered from all over the United States with racers coming from Australia, Canada, and Japan. With this being my first Naonals as a Contest Director I’m excited to see many of my old friends and I’m looking forward to making new ones. This year’s event will have plenty of racing and some great aer race acvies, so we can all sit around and tell each other how we almost won earlier that day. Our Welcome Party will be held at the race site with Jim Feener providing the spirits and we have some great food planned. Team Ed will be hosng a mixer at the host hotel mid‐week and there can’t be a NAMBA Naonals without the Paddleboat Race. This year the Paddleboat Race will be held at the race site along with the Scale and Thunderboat What’s Inside judging, and of course there will be food and drinks to go along with some President’s great bench racing. This year’s banquet is shaping up to be something special, Letter 4 it’s going to be wonderful me! History of Sunset Park The land that the park is on was first developed as a ranch in 1900 by John F Miller, who owned Hotel Nevada ‐ one of the first casinos in Las Vegas. In 1939 the ranch was sold to J. Kell Houssels Sr, who owned the Las Vegas Club Casino. Houssels turned the ranch into the Vegas Stock Farm where he bred and trained thoroughbred horses. Though he was a successful gaming pioneer in the city, the racehorse farm was his passion. In 1963 Houssels sold the ranch to Wilbur Clark (owner of the Desert Inn Casino) and a few other investors. Clark County eventually purchased the area in 1967 and turned it into Las Vegas’s first city park. The park today is 324 acres in total size and in addional to the pond/RC boat ramp it contains: 9 soball fields several miles of walking paths dog park 2 lile league fields fitness course 7 sand volleyball courts 8 basketball courts splash pad 8 tennis courts. 5 playgrounds disc golf course It’s rumored that the park le more than 200 bodies buried in the area before construcon, but there is no evidence that a cemetery was ever on the site. The pond is 14 acres in size and between 10‐12 feet deep. Besides being where we race it’s also home to various species of fish, stocked weekly 35’ MOAI with rainbow trout between November and STATUE March and monthly with channel caish from April to October. Originally a pair of statues In 1980 William Benne (of Circus Circus fame) that sat donated $66k to the country for improvement of outside the the model boat facility, which paid for the entrance to following: the Stardust Shade shelter (which we sll enjoy today) casino, for the Drivers overlook plaorm Aku Aku Paved entrance road restaurant.
