WITH B OB KIN GS L E Y TO: ALL A.C.C. AFFILIATE STATIONS SUBJECT: A.C.C. YEAR END TOP 100 CHART All of us here at American Country Countdown place the highest value on our ongoing association with Billboard Magazine. We believe the accuracy of their weekly country chart is unparalleled. However, American Country Countdown's upcoming year end top 100 list has some notable differences from the one published in Billboard, and here's why: Billboard's list is an accurate reflection of the 100 most-played songs during and only during the twelve month survey period from December 2nd 1995 to November 30th 1996. The problem is that the vast majority of our listeners don't understand why so many big hits rank so low in the Billboard year end survey. The explanation is simple. Records whose popularity spans two survey periods have their total airplay points divided . For example, 'Rebecca Lynn' by Bryan Wllite was the first #1 hit of 1996. So it receives no credit for the 13 weeks it spent on the chart in '95. As a result it ranks at #87 on billboard's year end list. There are similar inequities with other #1 songs, Including 'Like The Rain" by Clint Black, which spent three weeks at #1 , but only ranks at #51 ........ "Tall Tall Trees• by Alan Jackson, which spent two weeks at #1 and finishes at #82. ... .... and ' That's As Close As I'll Get To Loving You• whicti spent two weeks at #1 and does not appear on the Billboard list at all. Please don't misunderstand. The Billboard list is a 100% accurate reflection of airplay within the survey period. However, we believe the strict cutoff dates make tor a year end chart that can't help but be confusing to our A.C.C. listeners. Therefore, we've devised a point system that is more equitable as it gives full credit to songs that peaked within the survey period. I hope this clears up any confusion about the difference in the two charts. As always, our purpose is to produce a show that pleases the listeners and we believe this year's top 100 countdown will do just that.
