I am excited to welcome you to our 2021 Dream Big Gala, a virtual cele- bration. The Dream Big Gala is our way of adapting our former “Dreamer Dinner” live event to a new virtual format. The gala is our biggest event of the year that raises the critical funding needed to facilitate our compre- hensive programming, including academic support, social and emotional development, college and career readiness, one-on-one mentoring, and parent engagement. It’s also an opportunity for us to honor local lumi- naries who inspire the hopes and dreams of our students while recogniz- ing the extraordinary accomplishments of our youth. Now more than ever, we are committed to providing long-term support to youth and their families living in under-resourced communities. We know this past year has been filled with significant loss and hardship worldwide that tested many mentally and physically. Our hearts signifi- cantly go out to those deeply impacted by the pandemic and racial ineq- uities. The ramifications directly impact our organization as they threaten our student population’s ability to pursue and complete their education. IHADLA’s modified virtual programming is our way of addressing the dis- parities obstructing student achievement. Community support allows us to continue remote offerings, bridging the pandemic gap, until all of our Dreamer Scholars return to in-person instruction. Whether you are a new or returning guest, we are incredibly grateful to have your support and hope you enjoy our programming. We are count- ing on your generosity, so we may continue to empower our Dreamer Scholars with the confidence and life skills required to pursue their most ambitious dreams. With heartfelt gratitude, Janell Lewis, MSW Interim Executive Director KATHRYN BUSBY Kathryn Busby serves as Executive Vice President/Head of TriStar Television, a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment. TONIGHT’S PRESENTERS HILL HARPER STANA KATIC MELISSA PETERMAN TONY OKUNGBOWA RAMÓN RODRIGUEZ OUR MISSION The “I Have A Dream” Foundation-Los Angeles provides long-term sup- port to youth living in under-resourced communities to empower them to achieve their full potential. We promote, from an early age, values of higher education and career success and provide opportunities guaran- teed through financial resources, enrichment programs and more. ABOUT US Established in 1987, the “I Have A Dream” Foundation—Los Angeles (IHADLA) is the second affiliate of the national “I Have A Dream” Foun- dation. In an effort to counter the 75% high school dropout rate for an entire 6th grade class of children from East Harlem, businessman Eu- gene Lang founded the national “I Have a Dream” Foundation forty years ago in New York, with the promise of full-paid college tuition upon their high school graduation. IHADLA builds upon the national organization’s college sponsorship model by investing in the lives of children from 1st grade to 1st job following post-secondary success. We’re unique in that, in addition to sponsoring an entire grade level of students at a Title 1 school (i.e., 90%+ receive free or reduced-cost lunch), we exclude no child based on academic capabilities and offer comprehensive and year-round programming, along with resource support. We make space at the table for all and provide $8k scholarships to each to pursue their college and career ambitions upon high school graduation. To prepare them for high school and college completion, IHADLA provides academic, social and emotional support, college and career readiness programs, parent engagement tools, and mentorships. We help students dream big, and we walk beside them until they achieve those goals! Since its founding in 1987, IHADLA has impacted over 11,500 individuals from underserved communities across Los Angeles County and beyond, including students, parents, and siblings. We currently serve 350+ youth amongst four programs in Inglewood, Watts, and Boyle Heights. All our Dreamer Scholars identify as people of color, and the majority are the first in their families to apply and attend college. Our staff is the most qualified to guide our cohorts. The entire program team are people of color and are from the same geographic areas or grew up in similar- ly marginalized communities like those we serve, Executive Director included.
