GLAMORGAN ARCHIVES/ARCHIFAU MORGANNWG Reference code: GB 0214 D1526 Title: Maendy (Maindy) Congregational Chapel, Llanblethian, Records Dates : 1878-1998 Level of description: Fonds Extent and medium: 0.002 cubic metres (7 files, 2 papers) Name of creator(s): Maendy Chapel Administrative/biographical history Maendy Congregational Chapel was built in 1802 and was an off shoot of the methodist congregation at Aberthin which had divided after a number of disputes towards the end of the eighteenth century. The Chapel was rebuilt in 1842. The religious census of 1851 recorded that the twelve month average attendance in the morning was 140, 80 scholars in the afternoon and 180 in the evening. John Evans was the Minister in 1851. In 1905 the number of communicants was recorded as 129, there were no Sunday scholars and 141 'adherents' (from evidence collected by the Welsh Church Commission). The chapel closed and planning consent was granted in 2008 for the conversion of the chapel into a single dwelling. Archival history The records were given to Cowbridge History Society in 2017, by the owner of the former chapel building. The records had originally been in the possession of Gwyn and Gwyn solicitors. Mentions previous indentures, 29 Sep 1802 and 19 Jan 1815 relating to two plots of land on which a meeting house had been erected (known as Maindy Chapel) and a graveyard. The deeds had been passed to him from solicitors Gwyn & Gwyn. The large bible was found in the building at the time he took it over.
