Born at Detroit, Michigan, Kenneth Fagans excelled in basketball during his undergraduate days at Huntington Park High School, and Oregon State University. Following graduation from Oregon State, Fagans enjoyed exceptional success as a coach at both Compton High School and Compton Junior College. His prep school basketball teams won 157 and lost but 15, winning two C.I.F. titles — having a three-year consecutive victory string of 571 Kenny has been C.I.F. Commissioner since 1954 and is also Cont- missioner of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Guy Wrinkle was born at Lebanon, Missouri. He was graduated from Garfield High School and U.C.L.A., gaining his Masters at U.S.C. At U.C.L.A., Guy competed in football, boxing, track and field, soccer and rugby. Wrinkle was a high school coach for 19 years, chiefly at Holly* wood. He also tutored athletes at North Hollywood and South Gate. Nine of his Hollywood basketball teams claimed league crowns and two of his tennis squads collected Los Angeles City championships, ~ Guy wa3 appointed Supervisor of Athletics for Los Angeles High Schools in 1958. -» Kenneth Pagans and Guy Wrinkle have contributed greatly to high school sports in the Southland! HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION THIRTIETH ANNUAL TRACK AND FIELD RECORD BOOK — 1966 1 he Helms Athletic Foundation over the past 30 years has published its Southern California Track and Field Record Book and issued it in the interest of high school athletics. Five hundred books are distributed each year, with the south- land's top prep performances listed for the season. Books are sent to coaches in all divisions and members of press, radio and television without charge. Material for this booklet is gathered from sources believed to be reliable. In some cases, performers are credited with non-winning times that may not be entirely authentic...although the athlete is always given the benefit of the doubt. Coaches, track officials and southland newspapers have provided the majority of marks listed. Special thanks is extended to Rick Smith (San Diego Tribune) and Don Clarkson, Commissioner of the San Diego Section, for supplying information on the San Diego area athletes. The Helms Foundation also thanks Jerry Weiner (Los Angeles City High Schools) and Don Anderson (CIF Southern Section) for their help in the compilation of best marks. This 30th annual track and field record contains marks established by former southland track greats, former team champions, and present city, state and national interscholastic records. There are also sections on top meets of the year, results of Southern California's top meets of the year, best all-time marks by southland prep athletes and many other interesting features. Helms Athletic Foundation, with offices at Helms Hall, Los Angeles, is spon- sored by Paul H. Helms, Jr. The Foundation was established in 1936, with one of its main functions that of recording achievements of athletes in all sports and in all divisions. Southern California High School Track and Field Record Books dating back to 1937 are on file in the Helms Athletic Foundation library. Also in the museum is the High School Track & Field Hall of Fame, with photos of athletes named for Ath- lete of the Year honors dating back to 1937. All athletes named for top honors in track and field have their names engraved upon the Paul H. Helms perpetual trophy, which is permanently lodged in Helms Hall, Los Angeles. All Athletes of the Year receive special medallion awards from the Helms Hall Board. Helms Hall is open daily except Sunday, nine to five and until noon on Satur- day. The Helms Hall library is available for research projects throughout the year. PHIL UNDERWOOD (DORSEY) & JOHN HUBBELL (LONG BEACH POLY) WIN TOP TRACK HONORS 2 printer supreme, Phil Underwood of Dorsey High School, and wondrous weightman John Hubbell of Long Beach Poly High, have been named Athletes of the Year in their respective divisions for the 1966 track and field season by members of the Helms Hall selection board. Phil Underwood was the Los Angeles Section, CIF selection, while Hubbell was the Southern Section CIF pick. Underwood, senior leader of coach Rod Richard's City and State champions, was a double winner at both the L.A. City and California State Meets. At East-LA, Phil set a new furlong mark of 21.0 and tied the century mark at 9.5> set by Hubie Watson in 1959. In State Meet exercises at Berkeley, Phil won the 220 in a record-tieing 20.5 and the 100-yard dash in 9.6. Phil now co-holds the state mark with Harold Busby, who established the 20,5 clocking last year. John Hubbell, Long Beach Poly's shot put phenom, made a mighty effort to eclipse Dallas Long's national record of 69-3 at both divisional and state meet levels. He could not manage a national mark on either occasion, however, he did set meet stand- ards of 67-9 3/4 (his all-time best) and 66-11 at Southern Section and State Meet championships. He bettered both previous CIF Southern Section and State Meet shot put marks by better than two feet. Phil Underwood was coached by former Bruin sprint star Rodney Richard, while John Hubbell performed for Leon Forman at Long Beach Poly.
