Common Track Terms Relay - 4 runners will run an equal amount of distance and pass a baton to each other. 1st leg, 2nd leg, 3rd leg and 4th leg. Jumps - High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault Throws - Shot put, disc, Turbo Jav Heat – A race is often run in sections due to more runners than available track lanes; these sections are known as heats. Mark – A mark is the measured distance of a valid throw or jump in a file event; this term can also be used in relationship to times, but is most often used as a call to let others know a jump or throw is allowable and should be measured. Disqualify – A term used when someone is unable to compete due to broken race guidelines. Waterfall Start – In some events it is allowable for more competitors than lanes to run at one time; runners are given instructions to cut over to the inside lanes when they are clear. This is a waterfall start. Starter – The person who starts the races with either a call, whistle blast or gun blast. Timer – A person who controls the clock. Recorder – A person who records times and marks for events. Blocks – An accessory used when beginning a race that elevates your feet so you can push off for a faster accelerated start. Infield – Any part of the field inside the track oval. Rolling Schedule – Events are run one after the other without time restraints or reference to a set time. Cafeteria Style – Athletes have a certain amount of time to complete their field event attempts; there is no specific order to call. On Deck – A term in field events meaning “second to attempt”. In The Hole – A term in field events meaning “third to attempt”. Sprints – Distance between 100 and 400 meters, hurdles, relays 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 Distance- Distance between 800 and 3200 meters, relay 4x800 Fields – any event off the track (long jump, discus, turbo jav, shot put, pole vault, triple jump) Order of Events 1. 4x800 Relay 2. 100 Hurdles 3. 100 Dash 4. 4x200 Relay 5. 1600 6. 4X100 Relay 7. 400 8. 300 Low Hurdles 9. 800 10. 200 11. 3200 12. 4x400 Relay .
