The Astros look more vulnerable after losing Gerrit Cole in free agency. Cole was 20-5 with an American League leading 2.50 ERA last year. He also struck out more than 300 batters. That’s a big hole for Houston to fill. Lance McCullers is back this year. Zack Greinke was a late season addition last year. He’ll be the number two starter behind Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander. The back of the rotation is likely some combination of Framber Valdez, Josh James and Jose Urquidy. The Astros also lost Will Harris, a bullpen workhorse. The bottom line is the Astros’ pitching doesn’t look as strong, while the offense should be just as productive. Alex Bregman, George Stringer, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, and Yuri Gurriel make for a fearsome offense. Last season’s Rookie of the Year Yordan Alvarez is on the Injured List with an undisclosed injury, and there is basically no timetable for his return.
