BROMELIAD LISTS OF HYBRIDS by Derek Butcher 10/2008 In 1977 we saw the first attempt at a listing of man-made hybrids in the Tillandsioideae (L B Smith 1977). While Dutrie (see Bulletin Horticole, Liege, Belgium) wrote widely on this subject in 1946-1948 there is no definitive list and rarely did he give full reference to previous publications. The same applies to Chevalier who wrote in a similar vein in Monographie des Bromeliacees - Tillandsiees, and there is sometimes conflicting evidence when Dutrie and Chevalier are compared. In L B Smith's lists there is a predominance of European hybrids produced from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. These listings of references are valuable to the researcher because many of the hybrids are still in circulation to this day. Some regrettably are wrongly named and only by referring back to these original descriptions can we find the correct answer. Remember, this was 27 years after the formation of the Bromeliad Society in America where in 1951 there was the proud boast "Much more hybridising can and will be done" Much hybridising was done but very few records were kept and nobody thought about controls. It was left to Lyman Smith to collate records for future reference. It was not until 1979 that the Bromeliad Society produced its first Check-list of hybrids entitled 'International Checklist of Bromeliad Hybrids' The year 1979 also saw the final volume of the Flora Neotropica monograph published. Here, more recent references to names of hybrids are listed. It can be clearly seen that billbergias were popular in Europe in the late 19th century and it was not until the 1960's that neoregelias started appearing in ever increasing numbers. Lyman Smith has left the hybridist with tangible evidence of past work. It is up to the Bromeliad Society International to continue on with this work and encourage a more scientific approach to hybridisation and the keeping of records. The production of a second edition of a world check list is a step in the right direction. This is entitled "The Bromeliad Cultivar Registry" (BCR) compiled by Don A. Beadle June 1998. This is now held in electronic form on the BSI web site in Cultivar Corner. It is updated monthly. In the early 1980’s Brian Smith of Texas went on his own crusade in listing names of plants including those sold by Nurserymen, mainly in Florida, and the last list produced was in 1984 which follows. Such an enterprise will never be attempted in the future. In 1987 Brian became the BSI Registrar but only stayed a short time because in 1990 he advised me that Don Beadle (who had taken over the reins) was at least getting some cooperation from American hybridists. The ‘Manuscript’ shows the great use of formulae to identify the plant and as we know this only identifies the parents IF they have been correctly identified, and no foreign pollen was involved. AND on the other hand there are those who name and do not divulge parentage. Oh, for the middle road! Regrettably Bromeliads are very easy to hybridise and everyone seems to have the same attitude as that expressed in 1951. What should be asked is “Is your hybridising really necessary?” It is a pity that an unregistered plant can be sold for the same price as a registered one which tends to remove an incentive to register. 2009-03-28 1 of 122 MANUSCRIPT OF BROMELIAD HYBRIDS AND CULTIVARS COMPILED BY BRIAN SMITH 3035 MONTEGO PLANO TEXAS 75023 This manuscript is not to be reproduced or distributed without the written permission of the author. While researching nursery lists it was found that many nurseries were putting their own names on unnamed plants developed by other hybridizers such as Oeser. As one nurseryman put it " a named plant sells better than an unnamed plant". It was found that many plants listed in catalogs as hybrids are really cultivars and should be listed as such but are not. For example: Neo. Cherry Smash is really a cultivar of Neo. carolinae Meyendorffii. Therefore all names that I know are cultivars are listed as such. The format of this manuscript is as follows: WINDERMERE (Hendrix,1983,(M)1980/(R)Hill,1983) Green Apple x Fireball (A) (B) (C) (D) (E) (F) (G) (A) - Name of hybrid or cultivar (B) - Hybridizer (C) - Date plant flowered (D) - Date cross was made (E) - Registrar of plant if different from hybridizer (F) - Date of registration (G) - Cross, not necessarly in seed parent first order This manuscript is cross-referenced, lists all synonyms, and is in alphabetical order for ease of reference. Updates will be attempted twice a year. A page inserted at the front will show what genera and the number of lines changed from the previous edition. There will be a slight fee for obtaining the updates but if interested in this service, write the author. I would like to hear opinions on the listing. To keep the list current, any new information is appreciated. I encourage people to send me plant lists and lists of their own private collections so that new items may be added. This was an endeavour of love as well as need. I hope you find it beneficial to you. 2009-03-28 4 of 122 ABROMEITIELLA DIVIERSCHREI AECHMEA ALTMANII ALVAREZ lueddemanniana cultivar AMAZONICA chantinii cultivar ANGELICA ANGRA DOS REIS angustifolia x chantinii (Deleon) ANONYMOUS ANTON ---- aquilega..x Portea petropolitana ---- araneosa x distichantha (Yamamoto) ---- araneosa x weilbachii (Yamamoto) ARES (Gulz) fulgens discolor x distichantha glaziovii ARMED SPEARPOINT.-PIPIN (Hummel) ARRIBA (Hummel) dealbata x ASH BLONDE chantinii cultivar ATON (Gulz) syn. fasciata Silver King AUSLESE fasciata cultivar AZTEC (Hummel) AZUR NIGRA (Hummel) BALBOA bromeliifolia cultivar BASTANTHA (Hummel) BELIZIA (Hummel) BENNY (Hummel) recurvata x BERT (Foster,1946) orlandiana x fosteriana x chantinii x nudicaulis - Berticaulis BERT F2 BERTICAULIS (Williams,1972,M1969) nudicaulis x Bert BI-COLOR (Hummel) BIG CHEESE (Hummel) BIG MAMA recurvata cultivar BIG STUFF (Hummel) BILL BARRETT (Hummel) BILL HOBBS syn.
