The Company was formed in 1911, by the merger of three major granite quarrying concerns based in Caernarfonshire. Most influential of these was Darbishires Ltd., who operated at Graiglwyd, on the eastern side of Penmaenmawr Mountain, after purchasing the quarry from the Kneeshaw and Lupton partnership in 1878. The other two Companies involved in the merger, were the Brundrit and Whiteway Company, who operated the Penmaen Quarry on the western slopes of Penmaenmawr Mountain, and were the only owners, being established there from 1830; and the Eifl Quarry of the Welsh Granite Company at Trefor, on the Llyn Peninsular. The Darbishire family were the major force within the new organisation, a situation that persisted into the 1950's. As the Company grew, other smaller quarries from areas in North and South Wales were absorbed into the organisation. When formed the constituent members of the new Company were already producing granite setts for roads and tramway systems in Britain and abroad, we recognise them as cobblestones. Crushed stone was also being produced, following investment in stone crushing machinery by Darbishires and Brundrits, in the latter years of the nineteenth century, these being used as road macadam and railway ballast. Sett production had virtually ceased by the middle of the 1930's, but roadstone and railway ballast are stil l produced today (1990). Expansion of the road network in Britain allowed the Company to develop tar coated stone, producing tarmac and asphalt, leading to a merger in 1921 with the Limmer and Trinidad Company, to form the Penmaenmawr and Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company, laying asphalt roads in the north of England and North Wales. The merger was dissolved in 1954, the Granite Company continuing tar production in its own right. Concrete, using granite by-products of the quarries, was also developed in the 1930's, and proved useful during World War Two for the making of air raid shelters and runways for the Royal Air Force. The Penmaenmawr and Welsh Granite Company took an interest in the Liverpool Artificial Stone Company in this period to take advantage of markets for Concrete products. In July 1963, the Penmaenmawr and Welsh Granite Company was absorbed by the Bath and Portland Stones Firms Ltd. at a cost of £856,000 and thus ceased to exist. The quarries are now part of the giant Amalgamated Roadstone Corporation who took them over from Kingston Minerals Ltd. in the early 1980's.
