As a consequence of field and laboratory studies, 31 Tricholoma species have been identified, and five of them (T. filamentosum, T. frondosae, T. quercetorum, T. rufenum, and T. sudum) have been reported for the first time from Turkey. The identification key of the determined taxa is given with this study. Key words: Tricholoma, biodiversity, identification key, Aegean region, Turkey 1. Introduction & Intini (this species, called “sedir mantarı”, is collected by Tricholoma (Fr.) Staude is one of the classic genera of local people for both its gastronomic and financial value) Agaricales, and more than 1200 members of this genus and T. virgatum var. fulvoumbonatum E. Sesli, Contu & were globally recorded in Index Fungorum to date (www. Vizzini (Intini et al., 2003; Vizzini et al., 2015). Additionally, indexfungorum.org, access date 23 April 2018), but many Heilmann-Clausen et al. (2017) described Tricholoma of them are placed in other genera such as Lepista (Fr.) ilkkae Mort. Chr., Heilm.-Claus., Ryman & N. Bergius as W.G. Sm., Melanoleuca Pat., and Lyophyllum P. Karst. a new species and they reported that this species grows in (Christensen and Heilmann-Clausen, 2013). According Turkey (Konya Province) as well as Sweden, Norway, and to the current literature, it seems that there are almost Spain. We thus assume that many more Tricholoma species 70 species distributed in Europe (Bon, 1991; Riva, 2003; are waiting to be discovered in Turkey. Galli, 2005; Christensen and Heilmann-Clausen, 2008; Turkey is the meeting point of three continents: Kibby, 2012; Christensen and Heilmann-Clausen, 2013), Europe, Asia, and Africa. It is also surrounded by sea on while more than 100 species are found in North America three sides, forming a peninsula. Moreover, Davis et al. (Bessette et al., 2013). Recently, a comprehensive study on (1971) reported that three phytogeographical regions, the the taxonomy of the genus Tricholoma in Northern Europe Euro-Siberian, Mediterranean, and Irano-Turanian, meet was conducted by Heilmann-Clausen et al. (2017) and 72 in Anatolia as a consequence of this unique geographical species were discussed based on morphological characters structure, called the Anatolian Diagonal. This geographical and ITS sequence data. Similarly, another comprehensive structure encourages plant and animal biodiversity. study was published by Reschke et al. (2018) from Yunnan Additionally, diverse climate conditions are found in Province of China and six Tricholoma species new to Turkey due to this unique geographical position (Ünal et science were described. The diversity and taxonomy of al., 2003). Therefore, Turkey has unique ecological features 70 species were discussed based on morphological and in terms of fungi growth with its diverse plant species and ITS sequences data. These observations show that the suitable climatic conditions. knowledge of the taxonomy and diversity of the genus The Aegean region is in the southwestern part of Tricholoma is not enough in the world. Turkey (Figure 1) in the Mediterranean and Irano- In Turkey, 54 Tricholoma species have been reported by Turanian phytogeographical regions. The region has several researchers (Intini et al., 2003; Sesli and Denchev, rich plant diversity and natural forests such as Cupressus 2008; Vizzini et al., 2015; Şen et al., 2018).
