Silverstream No 36 Friday 20 November 2020 Vision Statement St Patrick's College, Silverstream is a boys’ school of excellence, founded on Catholic and Marist values and traditions where students develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and values which enable them to become compassionate, just and successful citizens. Our students are challenged and motivated to achieve personal excellence in an innovative learning environment enhanced by tradition, superb facilities, quality teaching and a supportive College community Tēnā koutou katoa, Greetings everyone As you will be aware it has been a difficult time for the College. The loss of a student is one of the hardest times for a School community. While we mourn the loss of Cy Florendo, Year 13, we acknowledge all the strength and support that has been given to the College community. Cy was farewelled from our Chapel and it was great to see Old Boys, Staff and Students remember Cy and celebrate his life. The singing of the School Anthem as the students formed a guard of honour while the hearse left was a very moving moment. The community of St Patrick’s College Silverstream express our deepest sympathy to Manuel, Christina and extended family. We also extend our prayers and thoughts to all those affected by this tragedy. We also mourn the loss of Old Boy, David Armstrong (graduated 2018), in a car accident on the River Road. His funeral will be held at the Upper Hutt Baptist Church, 1 Milton Street, Upper Hutt at 1.00pm on Saturday 21 November. We ask for your prayers for David’s family and also ask if students do attend the funeral that they wear their formal uniform. God in his wisdom has called Cy and David early. They are in God’s presence. If someone precious to me leaves my world, please God let that person know what he or she meant to me. Let them know I will never forget them, they will always be here in my heart until the day we meet again. May they Rest in Peace. This term is a very short term of 8 weeks and we have celebrated the achievements of our seniors but especially our Year 13’s as they have graduated. The award evenings have gone well and I thank staff, parents, caregivers and coaches who have made this possible. I ask God’s blessing on our leavers and wish them well for their exams. No doubt those sitting NCEA will find it difficult after a challenging year but all the best. I would like to thank everyone for their contribution to Stream this year. It has been carved in the Taranaki style by Ihaia Puketapu and Sonny Davis. Funding was provided by Wellington Community Trust, Creative Communities Upper Hutt, Totara Trust and St Patrick’s College Silverstream. The Waharoa has been named Rongomatane and this is an explanation of the meaning: The gable mask is Rongo The figure at the bottom of the Pou is Tane there this has been named Rongomatane. Rongomatane represents the atua of the boys of the College. Rongo is the atua of Peace and Agriculture. Tane represents the boys of the College Rugby is considered a peaceful activity because it is played with sportsmanship. The structure (Waharoa) as a whole represents moving from an organised Pakeka world into a more natural regenerating podocarp forest. The carved maihi (bargeboards) and amo (side posts) confer a blessing and offer protection to those who pass through the Waharoa. You are invited to a blessing of Rongomatane on Wednesday 2 December at 12.30pm ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE SILVERSTREAM NEWSLETTER 66 ■ UNIFORM SHOP YEAR 8 STUDENTS A note to all Year 8 Students, who have been given a place for Year 9 2021.
