Italian Filmmaker Bolognini to Be Shown at Museum

Contact: NO. 96 Lillian Gerard (212) 956-7596 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Helaine Messer (212) 956-7504 ITALIAN FILMMAKER BOLOGNINI TO BE SHOWN AT MUSEUM A program of five films by Mauro Bolognini, Italian filmmaker of the post­ war era, will be presented from January 19th through the 23rd at The Museum of Modern Art. The series, made possible with the cooperation of Professor Marco Miele, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute, will include "II BelTAntonio" (1960), featuring Marcello Mastroianni, "La Viaccia" (1961), with Jean-Paul Belmondo and Claudia Cardinale, and "Metello" (1969), featuring Lucia Bose and Massimo Ranieri. Born in Pistoia, Italy in 1922, Bolognini made his debut as a director in 1953, and within a few years established himself as one of the major talents of the post-neo-realist generation. Particularly noted for his visual style and accurate recreation of past eras in Italian history, Bolognini has focused on social themes and worked in collaboration with Pratolini, Moravia and other significant Italian writers. He had a particularly long and fruitful associa­ tion with poet and novelist Pier Paolo Pasolini before Pasolini's debut as a film director. Among the notable actors he has directed in a variety of films are Ingrid Thulin, Valentina Cortese, Giancarlo Giannini and Richard Harris. His most recent film "The Inheritance," starring Anthony Quinn and Dominique Sanda, is scheduled for release in the United States during 1978.
