SKILL DEVELOPMENT BLOCKS (45 minutes) Block A - Shooting/Offensive Skills 1. Active Warm-up with Ball (3 minutes) • Jog - ball taps • High Knees - right hand dribble • Butt Kicks - left hand dribble • Power Skip - power Lay-up • Karaoke - chin ball • Sprint/Pivot/Backpedal - speed dribble/pull-back dribble • Baby Crossover dribble 2. Stationary Two-ball Dribbling (3 minutes) • Same • Alternate • Push-pull • Kill • Cross-over • Between-the-legs 3. Partner Dribble-on-the-Move (5 minutes) 40 seconds for each set - dribble width of court - alternate turns Begin in Power Position - dribble to opposite side - jump stop - pivot - dribble back • Speed dribble (R/L) • Speed dribble/Pull-back/Go (R/L) • Speed dribble/Pull-back/Cross-over/ opposite hand speed dribble (R/L) • Open Court attack w/ move every 3rd dribble (cross-over, between-the-legs or wrap-around) • Two-ball dribbling 4. Shooting Progression - partners or 3ʼs (12 minutes) • Groove Shots: 3 swishes - step back - repeat - switch shooters on miss • 50% makes: shoot for 1:00 from same spot - on 2nd turn step back if 50%+, same spot if <50% • Touch spot-Shot spot: Baseline-wing, wing-point (right side-left side), catch & face- up w/ inside pivot foot (repeat 45-60 seconds) • Drive & Finish: Driver scores in lane - rebounds - spins out & repeat from various spots, partner slides to dribble-drive spot on each drive (repeat 45-60 seconds) • Drive & Kick: Driver penetrates in lane - jump stop - kicks out w/ overhead pass - partner slides to dribble-drive spot for shot (repeat 45-60 seconds) 5. Pro-Time (7 minutes) • Start on baseline - make move at hash before & after half-court - finish in lane - rebound & go to end of opposite line • Vary dribble moves - hesitation, cross-over, fake cross-over, pull-back, between legs, wrap around • Vary finish - Power lay-up, Pump & Power, Opposite-side Power, One-footed lay- up, Reverse lay-up, Lane pull-up off glass, Floater, Elbow pull-up, 3-point pull-up SKILL DEVELOPMENT BLOCKS (45 minutes) 6. Half-court 1-on-1 (5 minutes) a. Operational (ball-side defender) • Offense starts from any of our perimeter spots - makes a v-cut v. defender and receives pass from passer • Catch, face-up & execute scoring move v. defender • Begin with passive defense to work on footwork and build up to full defense on both pass denial and guarding on catch • Limit offense to two or three dribbles on drive b. vs. Close-out (help-side defender) • Defender begins in lane & close out on pass • Offense begins with step-in on catch (no v-cut) Other 1-on-1 options • Limited dribbles • In the post • From half-court • Continuous (defensive rebound to spin-out) • K-State 1-on-1 (O & D on blocks, O roll ball out & play - player or coach choose spot) 7. Team Around-the-World (5 minutes) • Pick spots for team shots • Team must make a drive, mid-range jump shot, & 3-point shot from each spot before moving to the next spot 8. Kentucky Free Throws (5 minutes) • Shoot in groups of 3 or 4 • Each player shoots a one-and-one (shoots 2nd ft only if 1st ft is made) • Group needs to make 6 or 8 free throws consecutively Block B - Team Offensive Skills 1. Active Warm-up with Ball (3 minutes) • See Block A 2. Passing Skills (3 minutes) a. Partner Passing (30-40 seconds sets) • Begin with 12-15 foot spacing - pass & cut with target hands, call out your partners name on each pass, catch & face-up • Chest pass, Bounce pass outside hip w/ each hand, Overhead skip pass, Shot fake-one dribble, Pressure-release dribble, Blast/Cross-over step-one dribble b. Blackbird Passing • Divide into 2 teams in half-court, teams are not defending each other SKILL DEVELOPMENT BLOCKS (45 minutes) • Players move around the court completing passes to their own team, without the ball players are finding space and creating passing lanes in anticipation of next pass • Run for set time or compete for first team to complete x# passes c. Sureness drill • In the half-court, start 6v4, then vary w/ 5v3, 5v4, 4v4, 3v3, 5v5 • Pass, move, catch & face-up while defense works for deflections, steals, traps • Play to x# of successful passes 3. Post Moves with Perimeter Feed (5 minutes) • 3 players: Post going block-to-block and passer at each wing • 4 players: Post, post defender, passer at each wing • 5 players: Post, post defender, passer at each wing and top • Run 30-60 seconds, vary moves, vary level of defensive pressure, add high-low pass • Defense vary - play behind, side (high or low, front if practicing high-low entry 4. Buccaneer Shooting (10 minutes) • Begin with Groove Shots • Run point-wing-wing or point-wing-corner • Two balls, two passers (1 coach, 1 player) • Always finish misses - catch before ball hits floor, finish with left hand • Rotation: point to wing, wing to passer, passer to point • Pass from point (wing) to passer and run basket cut/fill or screen away/cutter options 5. Full-court Rush drills (5 minutes) • 1-on-0: Sit drill or Pass Ahead drill • 2-on-0: Rebounder & outlet run various 2-player combinations - outlet finish, rebounder fill wing for pass & finish, outlet drive & kick, outlet dribble to wing & feed post • 3-on-0: Rebounder, outlet, & wing run 3-player transition options • add offensive defender in back court to offensive rebound, pressure rebounder, or defend outlet • 3-on-0 Northern: Begin on baseline with middle and two wings - advance with pass only in lanes into various finishes and passing/screening combinations for score 6. 2-on-2/3-on-3 Full-court (6 minutes) • Begin with two players on baseline & coach pass or with one player as inbounder • When 2-on-2, off-ball offensive player must stay behind the ball until reaching opposite 3-point line, then play live • When 3-on-3, third offensive player in middle cannot receive a lob pass • Defenders are either working help & recover, or traps • 7. 3-on-3 Buccaneer (5-game) (8 minutes) • Play offense point-wing-wing or point-corner-wing SKILL DEVELOPMENT BLOCKS (45 minutes) • If drill is point-wing-corner, add open passer to opposite wing so when ball goes to point that player has option to pass either way • Offense is working to score following 5-game rules/options • Variation: no-dribble rule, two-dribble maximum, coach calls for specific cut/screen 8. Arkansas Fastbreak drill ( 5 minutes) • Divide into teams of 5 players • Begin with one player shooting free throw, and two players from other team on free throw lane - other players from each team on opposite sideline • Defense transitions 2-on-1 after made or missed FT • Other team transition back 3-on-2 by bringing in players from sideline on the run • Then back 4-on-3, 5-on-4, and with each team getting a 5-on-5 transition • Team with most points (baskets & offensive rebounds) wins • Only get 1 shot and 1 offensive rebound opportunity • Drill is continuous transition so ball is live through the 2nd 5-on-5 Block C - Defensive Skills 1. Active Warm-up with Ball (3 minutes) • See Block A 2. Close-out/Slide Drill (3 minutes) • Two lines on baseline (one at each lane line) w/ coach or ball at each elbow • Sprint to close-out, hop & drop outside foot then slide in stance to corner, reverse pivot then slide to half-court, jog to end of opposite line • Variation: 1-on-1 from wing - add player in each corner with ball & player at each wing - after defensive slide to corner, touch ball, close out on wing player as ball is passed, play live 1-on-1 v. wing 3. Full-court 1-on-1(6 minutes) a. Zig-zag • Boundary - sideline & lane line (defense advantage) or mid-line (offense advantage) • Variation: On coach whistle, offense bumps defender in chest w/ ball for defender to take charge • Variation: When defender touches half-court turn and sprint to block to take charge while offense player attacks rim & must shoot lay-up b. Fosterʼs 1-on-1 • Offense at half-court & defender at opposite top of key • On “Go” offense sprints to opposite FT line and defender touches baseline • After touch offense receives pass from coach - offense attacks basket and tries to get in lane vs. defender - offense gets one shot c. 1-on-2/2-on-1 • Begin drill with one offensive player attacking two defensive players SKILL DEVELOPMENT BLOCKS (45 minutes) • On turnover, defensive rebound, make, crossing “finish line” or coach whistle, drill converts to two defenders taking ball on offense and attacking the one now on defense • Variation: Coach or another player is “safety” receiver - when safety shows hands, the one offensive player can pass and then work to get ball back and continue attack 4. 3-on-3 Team Rebound Game (5 minutes) • Divide into two teams - 3 vs. 3(3 offensive rebounders, 3 defensive rebounders) rotate in on each shot by coach • Ball is live, make or miss, until defense secures rebound - offensive team gets one point for each offensive rebound (so offense can continue to rebound & score) • Each team is on offense for two minutes - Most points wins 5. 2-on-2 Close-out w/ Point Passer/Driver (8 minutes) • Ball begins at point - on first two passes the defense moves to position • On third pass, play live 2-on-2 • In live 2-on-2, passer is in play to pass, drive, or shoot 6. Four-corner Shell Drill (10 minutes) • All defenders begin in lane and close-out to position on coach pass from baseline • Defenders must make two consecutive stops to change • Variations: 4-on-5 with open post or 4-on-6 with an open driver in each corner 7.
