As you have no doubt noticed, the culture that we grew up in was a great deal more tolerant than the current one. With its increased demand for tolerance, the culture has become less so. But the contradictions of the culture are not our main concern. No, what is profoundly disturbing is the contradiction and ambiguity in the Church itself. The relativism – or denial of absolute truth – that Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI warned us against in the culture seems to have found a perch in the clerical hierarchy. In some parts of Germany – depending on the local bishop’s opinion – Protestants are being welcomed to Communion. Never mind that Protestants reject what the Church means by Communion and that union with Christ is most fully found through the supernatural offices of the Church. And in other places, like Argentina and Malta, unrepentant adulterers are receiving Communion as long as they feel okay about it – and as long as their priests approve. So, some adulterers, the “good” ones, will be allowed to receive while others, the “bad adulterers,” will not. Yet both are guilty of the exact same transgression. So, what gives? When the Jewish leaders were disputing with Christ Catechism of the Catholic Church because they didn’t like what he said, he told them that knowing Him and keeping His word –the truth – would set them free.
