The facts and figures furnished in this hand book will serve as a useful apparatus for the planners, policy makers, researchers and also the general Public those who are interested in improved understating of the district at microlevel. Deputy Director of Statistics, Erode SALIENT FEATURES OF THE DISTRICT LOCATION The Erode District is located between 10 36" and 11 58" of North Latitude and between 76 49" and 77 58" of East Longitude and above the Mean Sea Level of 171.91 Meters. Erode District is being surrounded by Karnataka State in North West, Coimbatore District in the West, Tiruppur District in the South and Namakkal, Karur Districts in the North East and East respectively. AREA AND POPULATION The Erode District records an area of 5722 Sq. Km, accounting for about 4.4 % of the Total Area of the State. As per 2011 Census, It has a population of 2251744 persons which constituted 3.1 % in the Total State population. As per 2011 census the population of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes constitutes 25.97% of the total population of the district. Its Density is 391 persons per Sq. Km. as against 555 in the State. The Literacy of the District is 72.58 % as against the 65.44 % of the State according to 2011 Census. In Erode district 1 Corporation, 4 Municipalities, 2 Revenue Divisions, 225 village panchayats and 375 Revenue Villages spread over in 14 Development Blocks located in 10 Taluks namely Erode, Perundurai, Modakkurichi, Kodumudi, Gobichettipalayam, Anthiyur, Bhavani, Sathyamangalam, Nambiyur and Thalavadi. CLIMATE AND SOIL Dry Climate prevails in the Eastern part of this District and the Western part has a semi dry climate. The Soil varies from place to place. The Soil found in this district is mostly Red loam, Red sandy soil which is favourable for the crops like Paddy, Groundnut, Sugarcane, Turmeric, Tobacco, Maize, Tapioca etc. The ground water level in this district varies from 15 feet to 50 feet in Wet area, 50 feet to 110 feet in dryarea. AGRICULTURE During the year 37.11% of the Total Geographical Area was available for cultivation. Out of the Total Cropped Area, Net Area sown constitutes 89.56% and Area Sown more than once works out to 10.44% of the Net Area Sown. Out of the Total Cropped Area, Food crops claim 63.86% and Non Food Crops claim 36.14%. Forest and Reserve Forest area covers 39.76% of the total geographical area of the district. IRRIGATION The Major Irrigation system in this district for this fasli year is Open Wells, constituting 44.70% of the Total Irrigated Area. When compared with last year, total rainfall recorded as 662.9%mm instead of 589.1mm. Total rainfall during the year was increased by 11.14%. Irrigated Area by Canals was reported as 40.25% and remaining 59.75% was fully supported by Open wells and Bore wells. ELECTRIFICATION All the 375 Revenue Villages in this District have been electrified. Almost all the villages have been connected with surfacedroads. MEDICAL AND HEALTH Medical Service to the people provided by a multiplicity of agencies like State Government, Local Bodies and Voluntary Organizations. EDUCATION There are 946 Primary Schools, 300 Middle Schools, 197 High Schools, 256 Higher Secondary School and 6 Teacher Training Institutes are in the district. In addition, there are 20 Arts and Science Colleges, 13 Engineering Colleges, 1 Medical College, 12 Polytechnics and 5 Industrial Training Institutes are rendering Education facility in this District.
