It was renamed in 1962 as “Bella Fontaine”, an inadvertent misspelling of French words, “belle fontaine,” meaning “Beautiful Spring”. 9565 Bellefontaine Road Saint Louis, MO 63137 BISSELL HOUSE The General Daniel Bissell House was built between 1812 and 1820 and is an outstanding and early example of the Federal style of architecture in the Missouri Territory. Daniel Bissell was an important figure in the early military history of the region, and the house reflects its occupancy by five generations of his family before they gave it to St. Louis County in 1961 with many of its original furnishings. The house is open for tours by advance reservation only. 10225 Bellefontaine Road Saint Louis, MO 63137 CASTLEPOINT PARK The parksite was primarily under the ownership of St. Casimir’s Catholic Church and other lot owners. The land was purchased in 1990, using funds allocated by the Department of Human Resources through the Community Development Block Grant Fund. Community Development Funds and two grants from the Land and Water Conservation Fund provided funding for Phase I and Phase II development of the site in 1991 and 1993. 2465 Baroness Drive Saint Louis, MO 63136 8 ENDICOTT PARK This land was purchased from the Terminal Railroad Company in 1961 with 1955 Bond Issue funds and the shelter was constructed shortly after. Management of the park was turned over to the City of St. John for a few years in the 1990s but then returned to the County. The playground, shelter, and restroom were renovated in 2001 using funds from St. Louis County’s metropolitan park funds. 2950 Endicott Ave Saint Louis, MO 63114 FORT BELLE FONTAINE Fort Belle Fontaine Park has been a St. Louis County Park since 1986. Few are aware that this was the first United States military installation west of the Mississippi River, established in 1805. Until it was replaced by Jefferson Barracks in 1826, Fort Belle Fontaine was an important gathering place in the wilderness for officers and enlisted men, Native American, French, Spanish and American settlers, trappers and traders, and the local businessmen and farmers who supplied the fort with necessities. 13002 Bellefontaine Road Saint Louis, MO 63138 KING PARK This park was acquired as the result of a large urban renewal project in the unincorporated area of Elmwood Park. Several names for the park were proposed through a local school “Name the Park” contest. On July 17, 1968 the area was dedicated as Martin Luther King, Jr. County Park. 1491 Dielman Road Saint Louis, MO 63132 9 KINLOCH PARK In 2017, the park basketball courts were renovated and turned into a piece of art, with murals painted by local artist William LaChance. The project was funded by Project Backboard, a non-profit organization dedicated to using these unique courts renovations as “a way to inspire multiple generations, and get people back together.” 5541 Mable Avenue Saint Louis, MO 63140 LARIMORE PARK The purchase of this 22 acre tract of land was authorized by ordinance in early 1960 using funds from the 1959 Bond Issue. 11726 Larimore Road Saint Louis, MO 63138 MCDONNELL PARK Originally referred to as the Adie Road park site, the site was purchased with 1977 Bond Issue funds and declared a County Park in 1978. On October 19, 1980 an ordinance was passed that officially changed the name to James S. McDonnell Memorial County Park in honor of the late founder of McDonnell Douglas Aircraft. 11726 Larimore Road Saint Louis, MO 63138 10 SIOUX PASSAGE PARK The confluence of the Missouri River and Mill Creek was a favored campsite for Indians of the late woodland and Mississippian periods. The area provided the needs of the early inhabitants. It featured good hunting and fishing, a source of flint for the manufacture of tools and weapons and an easily accessible spring provided all-important drinking water. The Sioux Passage Park Archaeological Site, listed in the National Register in 1974, is located in the park. 17930 Old Jamestown Road Saint Louis, MO 63034 SPANISH LAKE PARK In 2001 the Cardinal Care program constructed “Spirit Field,” an accessible baseball field, in the upper part of the park. 12500 Spanish Pond Road Saint Louis, MO 63138 ST. VINCENT PARK The Community Center was opened in June 1989. There are supervised recreational programs, civic group meetings and organized basketball and day camps at the facility. The Water Park was opened in August 1994. 12500 Spanish Pond Road Saint Louis, MO 63138 VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK The pond is under the management of the Missouri Department of Conservation, including the dock, the stocking of fish, and shoreline treatment. 2577 Redman Road Saint Louis, MO 63136 11 BUDER PARK The original tract of around 140 acres was given to the City of St. Louis in 1917 and 1918 by Gustavus A. Buder. Because the City never developed the property as required, G. A. Buder provided in his will that his executors reclaim it. He died in April 1954, and that December, G. A. Buder, Jr. was able to deed it to St. Louis County. 11726 Larimore Road Saint Louis, MO 63138 CREVE COEUR PARK The name is French, literally meaning “broken heart” but used as a figure of speech to describe a great grief, sorrow, or affliction. Although obviously spurious tales of Indian maidens have been told in the 20th century about the origins of the name here, the truth is that the Anglo settlers in this area never learned why earlier French settlers had employed this expression. Sailboat Cove - 13725 Marine 63146 Upper Park - 13236 Streetcar Drive 63043 EBSWORTH PARK Nestled in grassy fields on 10.5 acres in the Kirkwood, Missouri, the Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park is a unique and significant residence designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, widely recognized as the greatest American architect of the 20th century. The 1,900-square-foot residence built for Russell and Ruth Kraus was the architect’s first building in the St. Louis area, and is one of only five Wright designs in Missouri. 120 N Ballas Rd.
