Jazz-T he Next Wave 2 About the artists New York native Tito Puente, one of the most notable American musicians of Latin descent , has worked continuously since 1937 and has recorded over 100 albums (for which he was presented a platinum record in 1994). Puente has been awarded four Grammys , numerous honorary doctorates , and has been featured in major motion pictures, television programs and concert appearances worldwide with his own ensemble and with other exceptional musicians including Mario Bauza, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich and Gloria Estefan. His compositions have been recorded and made famous by notable performers, such as Oye Como Va recorded by Carlos Santana. Puente is joined by Giovanni Hidalgo, congas; Johnny Almendra, drums and percussion; Milton Cardona , congas, percussion and vocals; and Andy Gonzales , bass. Hector Martignon and The Foreign Affair Trio add an exciting dimension to this illustrious lineup. Pianist Martignon, born in Colombia, received his Master 's degree in classical piano and composition from the Hochschule fur Musik Freiburg. He has recently performed with Max Roach, Don Byron, and recorded Paul Simon's The Capeman, for which he served as arranger and assistant musical director. The trio, comprised of Martignon, Jairo Moreno on bass, and Satoshi Takeishi on drums, will be joined by special guest Ray Barretto, renowned musician and composer. Byron 's ensemble is comprised of Ralph Alessi, trumpet ; Edsel Gomez , piano; Leo Traversa , bass; Ben Wittman , drums; and Milton Cardona, congas. Don Byron has performed with such renowned musicians as Geri Allen, the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Living Colour. Recent performances at BAM include last year's program of Jazz-The Next Wave, a bill that included Byron and his ensemble Existential Dread, and the renegade groove instrumentalists Medeski Martin and Wood. Byron, the artistic director of Jazz-The Next Wave at BAM, curated and hosted a series of evening jazz concerts in the BAMcafe in 1997. The New York Times writes: "[Byron has] taken a scholarly approach to jazz without a hint of academic stuffiness ... Every time Mr. Byron revisits the music of a neglected jazz figure or mixes hip-hop with jazz in a way that eluded the acid jazzers, he's not only charting new musical territory but he's actually an undercover critic trying to re-write the music's history." more ... Jazz- The Next Wave 3 Don Byron's sixth album , Nu Blaxploitation, (recently released by Blue Note Records) is a collection of funk and spoken -word tracks. It includes lyrics by poet Sadiq Bey on a broad range of political and news topics as well as compositions by 60s and 70s artists such as Mandrill and Jimi Hendrix. Byron is unbound by gemes and styles, proven in albums such as Tuskegee Experiments and Bug Music that include compositions by such broad-ranging artists as Ellington and Schumann. His fascination with the work of Ellington, Raymond Scott and John Kirby continues in Tunes & 'Toons, a highly popular program that pairs live performances by Byron and his ensemble with classic Warner Brothers' cartoon vignettes. A BAM Education & Humanities program, this ongoing series demonstrates to young people the breadth of jazz's influence on popular culture.
