The conference was a great success and many of the pres- entations given in La Rochelle can be found in this volume. We would also like to thank all those who helped with the publication process, par- ticularly all of our reviewers for their professional and constructive read- ings of the texts, Eamon Maher, for his expert advice and guidance, and Christabel, Laura-Beth and Jasmin at Peter Lang, who were always available and knew just how much pressure to apply to get results! We would also like to thank our laboratory, the CRHIA (Research Centre for Atlantic and International History), our colleagues at the CIEL (Department of Languages for Special Purposes) together with Estelle Epinoux and the EHIC (Espaces Humains et Interactions Culturelles) lab in Limoges for their financial and moral support, along with our colleagues at the University of La Rochelle who contributed to the smooth running of the conference, Isabelle Marchesseau in particular. Many thanks are also due to Catherine Benguigui and her colleagues in the Department of Culture (l’Espace Culture/Maison de l’étudiant), and Jean-Marc, Sébastien, Julien et al. in the Sports and Physical Education Department. We would particularly like to express our deep gratitude for the unstinting generosity that was shown to us by the late Laurent Estiot of the Sports Department in providing both financial and logistical help, and without whom the Friday afternoon tour of La Rochelle would have been neither possible nor so much fun. He is greatly missed. ‘Le seul véritable voyage, le seul bain de Jouvence, ce ne serait pas d’aller vers de nouveaux paysages, mais d’avoir d’autres yeux, de voir l’univers avec les yeux d’un autre, de cent autres …’ ‘The only true voyage of discovery, the only fountain of Eternal Youth, would be not to visit strange lands but to possess other eyes, to behold the universe through the eyes of another, of a hundred others …’ — MARCEL PROUST La Prisonnière (À la recherche du temps perdu) The Prisoner (Remembrance of Things Past) Gallimard, 1923 Frank Healy and Brigitte Bastiat Introduction Life is a voyage. From Homer’s The Odyssey, through Dante’s Inferno; from Shakespeare (‘all the voyage of their life / Is bound in shallows and in miseries’)1 to Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress; from more recent Victorian romantics, notably Thomas Cole, whose most famous work is his series of four paintings representing The Voyage of Life (1842 – The National Gallery of Art, Washington, USA), to Walt Whitman (‘Oh Captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done […]’);2 whether it be in literature, painting or other forms of art, the voyage is a metaphor that represents life. It is a metaphor that is both ancient and widespread. Its expression can be found in the origins of exploration, over 60,000 years ago. Wanderlust has propelled our civilisation across the infinitely deep sea of the unknown, both of the inner and outer worlds, to escape the mundane or flee oppres- sion, to conquer natural boundaries and to give meaning to the world in which we live. Throughout history, one of our most deep-seated impulses has been the desire to explore, to push back the boundaries of the unknown. Humanity’s voyage has taken the form of a quest, an odyssey, an expedition – and as such, constitutes one of the driving forces of civilisation.
