Inlate2001,Dr.VanAllentransferredthematerialsdescribedinthepresentinventory. ThisaddendumdocumentsDr.VanAllen’sactivitiesfromthelate1980stothelate 1990s.Inorganizingthisgroupofpapers,IsoughttorespecttheworkofDr.VanAllen aswellastheordersetforthbyChrisHalas’soriginalfindingaid. In2000,theHalasinventorywasdigitizedbytheAmericanInstituteofPhysics,encoded inEAD(EncodedArchivalDocument)format,andmadeavailableontheInternetat http://www.aip.org/web2/aiphome/history/ead/iowa_java_papers/19990077.html.This GuidetoanAddendumhasalsobeendigitizedandaddedtotheAIPsite. OrganizationoftheaddendumandcompilationofthisGuidetoanAddendumwasmade possiblebyagranttoDr.VanAllenfromtheIowaSpaceGrantConsortiumandits director,WilliamJ.Byrd,ofIowaStateUniversity.MyworkwasguidedbyDr.Van Allen,informedbyChristineHalasWood,andsupportedbythelibrariansandstaffin SpecialCollectionsattheUniversityofIowaLibraries.Alloftheseindividualshelped meincreatingthisfindingaid,anaccomplishmentthatwouldnothavebeenpossible withoutthem. JeremyM.Brown,ProjectArchivist 6GuidetoanAddendumtoTheJamesA.VanAllenPapersandRelatedCollections ScopeandContentNote,AddendumtotheJamesA.VanAllenPapers: A.GeneralCorrespondenceandAssistantFiles: Thissubsectioniscomprisedprimarilyofcorrespondence.Themajorityofthissection, the“MiscellaneousA-Z”files,wasassembledinfilecabinetsbyDr.VanAllen’slong- timeassistant,Mrs.EvelynD.Robison.Ihaveslightlydivergedfromtheoriginal collection’sprecedentinthatIhaveleftthesubjectfilesinterfiledwiththealphabetical filesinordertopreserveMrs.Robison’sfilestructure.Manyoftheitemsfoundinthe subjectfilesoverlapwithlaterpartsofthecollection,andonemusttakecaretonotethe cross-references.Thefilingstylechangesmarkedlyinthemiddleof1995,followingMrs. Robisondeath,andtheamountofmaterialsfileddecreasedgreatly. Thesecondpartofthissection,“GeneralCorrespondence,”containsonly correspondence,themajorityofwhichwasfoundinanunsortedstate,separatefrom othermaterialsinMrs.Robison’sformeroffice.Thesematerialsarefiled chronologically,as“incoming”and“outgoing”.Incomingautographrequestsarefound attheendoftheoutgoingcorrespondence. ThelasttwopartsofthissectionaredocumentsproducedbyMrs.RobisonandChris (Halas)Wood.Mrs.Robison’syearbookscontainappointmentinformationaswellas informationregardingdeadlinesandothertasksassociatedwithsupportingDr.VanAllen andthePhysicsDepartment.Thesespantheyears1966to1995.ChrisWood,the archivistfortheoriginalcollectionprovidedhercompositionbooks,whichcontain informationabouttheoriginalcollectionandprovidefurthercontextforDr.VanAllen’s workingeneral. B.Research: SponsoringAgencies.Thismaterialwasfoundintermingledwithother,unrelated materialsandshouldfillgapsintheoriginalcollection.AnexceptiontothisisDr.Van Allen’sOfficeofNavalResearch(ONR)files,whichprovideanupdateonhisactivities sincethedonationoftheoriginalcollection. SpacecraftMissions.ThemajorityofthematerialmakingupthissectionisfromDr.Van Allen’songoingprojectwithPioneer10/11.Thefirstseveralboxesofmaterialoriginated fromDr.VanAllen’soffice.ThebulkofthePioneermaterialwasfiledbyMrs.Robison, whosefilingsystemhasbeenpreservedhere.Therearealsosignificantamountsof materialfortheHawkeyeandVoyagermissions.Manyphenomenawerestudiedby comparingdataobtainedusingdifferentspacecraft.Thesetypesofanalysesarefoundin the“jointmissionanalysis”category. C.ReferenceandSubjectFiles. GuidetoanAddendumtotheJamesA.VanAllenPapersandRelatedCollections7 ThebulkofthematerialinthiscategorycomesfromDr.VanAllen’spersonalfiling cabinets.Thefoldersthemselveswerescatteredacrossvariousfiledrawers,butunlikethe othermaterials,andalthoughimportanttoDr.VanAllen’swork,theseweregenerally nothiscoresubjectareas.Theclippingsthatnowcomposetheclippingsfilewerefound inmanydifferentplaces.TheyarearrangedchronologicallyanddepictDr.VanAllen’s interests.ThefirstsectionoftheclippingsfileismadeupofarticlesaboutDr.VanAllen himself;therestwerefoundwithhispapers. D.AdvisoryandProfessionalActivities Mostofthematerialinthiscategoryfillsgapsintheoriginalcollection.Organizations thatappearedintheoriginalfindingaidareorderedinthesamewayinthisaddendum, althoughnotallarepresenthere.Organizationsthatwerenotintheoriginalfindingaid havebeenplacedfollowingtheothergroups. E.ConferenceFiles ThefilescontaininformationpertainingtomeetingsinwhichDr.VanAllenwasa participant.Itisimportanttolookatboththespeechesandlecturescategoriesastheyare verysimilarinnature.Thesefilesarearrangedchronologically. F.TripFiles ThesetripfileswerecreatedbyMrs.Robison,andthereisamarkeddifferenceinstyle afterherdeathin1995.ThetwogroupingsoffilesandbluebinderspreserveMrs.R’s originalsystem. G.ProfessorialMaterial Liketheoriginalcollection,thissubseriesisseparatedintotwosubcategories.Thefirst containsmaterialrelatingtoclassesthatDr.VanAllentaughtandreflectshisteaching style.ThesecondcontainsmaterialfromstudentswhoreceivedadvanceddegreesasVan
