Rob Becker's Defending the Caveman

Rob Becker’s Defending the Caveman Rob Becker’s wildly popular comedy, Defending the Caveman is the longest running solo play in Broadway history. A peacemaker in the ongoing misunderstandings between men and women, Caveman originally opened in San Francisco in June 1991 and soon moved to Dallas. After a year in Dallas – now an unqualified hit – Caveman went on to sold-out engagements in Washington DC, Philadelphia and Chicago, before opening on Braodway in 1995. After running two and a half years, and playing 702 performances at the Helen Hayes Theater, Caveman entered the record books as the longest running solo play in Broadway history, surpassing Lily Tomlin’s Search for Sign… and Jackie Mason’s The World According to Me. The “outrageously funny and surprisingly sweet exploration of the gender gap” (Chicago Sun-Times) has made Rob Becker’s Defending the Caveman “a comic phenomenon”. (New York Times) Rob Becker’s hilariously insightful play about the ways men and women relate has both sexes roaring with laughter and recognition. In the audience, lost of affectionate nudging goes on during the performance and couples are commonly seen strolling out into the night holding hands. Becker also has a loyal following in the therapy community, having been seen and recommended by thousands of psychologists and counselors. In 1996, he performed for over 2,000 therapists at the annual convention of American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) in Toronto. Coming form a background in stand-up comedy, Becker wrote Defending the Caveman over a three-year period during which he made an informal study of anthropology, prehistory, sociology and mythology. When he isn’t touring, Rob lives in a small town in northern California with Erin, his wife of eighteen years, and their three small children. With hilarious insights on contemporary feminism, masculine sensitivity and the erogenous zone, Rob Becker has found a way to mine the commonplace of relationships that goes straight to the funny bone. Rob Becker’s Defending the Caveman is currently touring throughout the United States and Canada, playing to standing room only crowds. International productions abound as well: England, Germany, Israel, South Africa, Australia, Iceland, Scandinavia and many more.
