ACLS Reads Documentary Film Series Open to adults & teens. Held at the Egg Harbor Township Community Center, 5045 English Creek Avenue. Short discussions follow the films. SURVIVAL IN SHANGHAI Thursday, September 1, 7-9 pm Explores Shanghai's role in sheltering Jewish refugees during World War II. One of two visa-free regions at the time, Shanghai received an estimated 25,000 Jews fleeing Nazi persecution between 1937-1939. The film is introduced by Betty Grebenschikoff, author of Once My Name Was Sara & a resident of Shanghai's Jewish ghetto during World War II. TREBLINKA'S LAST WITNESS Thursday, October 6, 7-9 pm Tells the story of Samuel Willenberg, survivor of the Treblinka death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. Willenberg's story is one of triumph & survival against staggering odds. The film is introduced by Dr. Mary Johnson, Stockton University Holocaust and Genocide Studies Adjunct Faculty & Senior Historian at Facing History and Ourselves. THE HIDDEN CHILD Thursday, November 10, 7-9 pm Tells the gripping story of Maude Dahme, one of the 100,000 Jewish children who survived the Holocaust with the help of compassionate strangers. Dahme was among 3,000-8,000 Jewish children in the Netherlands who were saved from Nazi death camps by courageous Christians. The film is introduced by Holocaust scholar and library system employee Kathy Tabasso, who has composed a study guide for Maude Dahme’s memoir, Chocolate, The Taste of Freedom.
