STEVE EARLE BRINGS SPIRIT OF TOWNES VAN ZANDT TO UM CONCERT MISSOULA - Country roots-rocker Steve Earle will return to Missoula to present a solo, acoustic concert Wednesday, Aug. 12, at The University of Montana. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre. Tickets are $33 and go on sale Friday, June 26, at all GrizTix outlets, online at http://www.griztix.com or by calling 406-243-4051 or 888- MONTAN A. Earle is on the road touring his latest release, “Townes,” a tribute album honoring his mentor and friend, the late Texas singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. The recording features 15 songs written by Van Zandt and has garnered worldwide critical acclaim. It debuted in May at No. 19 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and No. 6 on the Billboard Country Chart. Spin magazine rated the album eight out of 10 stars and said, “He does his idol justice.” Rolling Stone magazine gave “Townes” three and a half out of five stars. “Is anyone more entitled to make a Townes Van Zandt covers album than Steve Earle, who named a son after the Texas singer-songwriter?” the Rolling Stone reviewer asked. “As Van Zandt’s protege, Earle knows these songs intimately - some of the greatest in the folk-country canon — and delivers them with the ease of breathing.” Earlier this month, Earle was the musical guest on the Late Show with David Letterman, performing an acoustic version of Van Zandt’s “Colorado Girl.” Earle’s own compositions have been recorded by everyone from Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson to Emmylou Harris and Travis Tritt. His numerous award-winning albums include “Washington Square Serenade,” which won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album at the 2008 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.
