AFCON2013 & CHAN 2014 Presentation to the Portfolio Committee on Sport LOC CEO: Mr. Mvuzo Mbebe 19 August 2014 Preparing for a Successful Tournament Background • In August 2011 it was announced that South Africa would host the Orange Africa Cup of Nations in 2013 (AFCON) as well as the Orange African Nations Championship 2014(CHAN). • This agreement was reached after the Libyan Football Federation swapped hosting rights with South Africa for AFCON 2013 and CHAN 2014. • South Africa was supposed to host AFCON in 2017. • With the legacy infrastructure inherited from the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, South Africa became the obvious choice to host the tournaments. Background (Cont.) • SAFA together with the Government agreed to set up an independent structure/company to run the two tournaments. • The Hon. Min. of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula, following a cabinet decision, announced the hosting cities as follows: AFCON 2013 Nelson Mandela Bay, eThekwini, Rustenburg, Mbombela and Johannesburg CHAN 2014 Polokwane, Mangaung and Cape Town How AFCON & CHAN were Delivered Critical Success Factors • Performance of Bafana-Bafana leading up to and during the tournament • FULL STADIUMS!
