Benilde-St..Margaret’s.School.has.an.enduring.and. fascinating.history.that.spans.an.entire.century..The.foun- dation.from.the.past.is.the.center.of.today’s.educational. future. In.1907,.the.Sisters.of.St..Joseph.of.Carondelet. founded.St..Margaret’s.Academy..The.original.school.was. located.near.the.Basilica.of.St..Mary.in.downtown.Min- neapolis..It.included.two.mansions.and.a.carriage.house. built.in.the.1880s..Loaded.with.charm,.the.school.featured. winding.staircases,.a.ballroom,.and.a.fireplace.in.every. classroom. The.school.gained.such.popularity.that.by.1959,.200. students.were.turned.away.for.every.100.accepted..Due. to.the.demand,.the.Sisters.had.the.foresight.to.build.a.new. school.on.28.acres.of.land.previously.purchased.on.Upton. Avenue,.near.the.Eloise.Butler.Wildflower.Gardens.and. Wirth.Park. Meanwhile,.the.Christian.Brothers.were.simultane- . In.1989,.a.junior.high.was.added,.and.one.hundred. ously.building.a.new.school.for.boys,.called.Benilde.High. seventh.and.eighth.graders.helped.to.move.BSM.into.a. School,.in.St..Louis.Park..Brother.Mark.Sullivan.opened. new.era.of.education.in.the.1990s. the.doors.to.Benilde.in.1956..Both.schools.prospered.and. In.2000,.an.aggressive.capital.campaign.entitled.“En- functioned.until.enrollment.declined.in.the.1970s,.as.costs. riching.Our.Legacy.of.Excellence”.was.begun.under.the. escalated. leadership.of.James.F..Hamburge..As.part.of.this.one-and- . Facing.the.departure.of.the.Brothers.in.1970.and.the. a-half-year.project,.a.new.chapel,.library,.classroom.wing,. prospect.of.the.school.closing,.parents,.students,.and. performing.arts.center,.and.both.senior.and.junior.high. staff.went.to.great.lengths.to.keep.it.open..Prayers.were. administrative.office.spaces.were.built. answered.and.their.efforts.rewarded.as.the.Benedictine. In.1974,.the.St..Margaret’s.facility.was.sold.to.the.Min- Raise.the.Red. neapolis.school.system,.and.the.merged. Raise.the.Red.is.responsible.for.the.new.athletic.com- Benilde-St..Margaret’s.High.School.opened.its.door.at. plex,.which.made.its.debut.in.the.fall.of.2010..The.athletics. the.former.Benilde.High.School.site..One.hundred.ninety. fields.project.included.an.artificial.turf.stadium.in.a.more. students.graduated.in.its.first.class. centralized.position,.a.gatehouse.with.restrooms,.upgrad- ed.track.and.field.facilities,.renovated.baseball.and.softball. fields,.improved.practice.fields,.consolidated.wetlands. (improving.their.environmental.integrity).and.increased. parking. Today,.BSM.is.a.strong.and.viable.school.that.serves. over.1,200.students.in.grades.seven.through.12.
