2017 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M BASEBALL 2017 SWAC Tournament New Orleans, La. / Wesley Barrow Stadium FEBRUARY (1-9) PANTHERS RETURN TO TOURNAMENT, FACE DEFENDING CHAMPS IN OPENING GAME The Prairie View A&M University Fri. 17 Illinois-Chicago^ W, 5-4 baseball team returns to the SWAC Tournament for the first time since 2015 as the #3 Western Division seed and will face #2 Sat. 18 Alcorn St.^ L, 3-11 East seed and defending SWAC Champion Alabama State in the opening round. Sun. 19 New Orleans^ L, 0-14 Illinois-Chicago^ L, 1-6 SURPASSED 2016 WIN TOTAL Currently with 18 wins on the season, Prairie View A&M (18-35 overall, 11-13 SWAC) is eight Wed. 22 Incarnate Word L, 1-11 (8) victories ahead of last year's total (10), with the SWAC win total the most since 2014. After winning only one SWAC series Fri. 24 Texas Rio Grande Valley L, 1-6 over the past two seasons, the Panthers won four league series this season and won back-to-back series vs. Southern and at Sat. 25 Texas Rio Grande Valley (DH) L, 0-4 / L 3-10 Arkansas-Pine Bluff, both occurrences for the first time since 2013. Hired in August 2015, Riggins led Prairie View A&M to 10 wins last season, including a split of the six-game season MARCH (9-13) series against 2015 SWAC Champion and eventual 2016 league runner up Texas Southern. Den Beste (6-0, 175, Sr., Wilmington, Calif.) earned first team honors after hitting a Tue. 28 HUSTON-TILLOTSON(DH) W, 9-0 / W, 12-11 career-best .364 with four home runs and 34 RBI. He is fourth in the SWAC in hitting, third in slugging percentage (.564), first in Fri. 31 Grambling St.* L, 1-6 both triples (seven) and total bases (110), is tied for first in times hit by pitch (17), is tied for seventh in doubles, (13), and tied for APRIL (8-7) ninth in on-base percentage (.443). He reached base 45 times in 52 games played this season, with 22 multi-hit games (12 2-hit, Sat. 1 Grambling St. (DH)* W, 10-0 (7) /W 7-5 nine 3-hit, one 4-hit) and 10 multi-RBI games (seven 2-RBI, two 3-RBI, one 4-RBI). Macias (5-8, 165, Sr., Pearland, Texas) earned Tue. 4 Texas St. L, 3-10 second-team all-conference honors, batting a career-best .287 with 43 hits, 28 runs scored, and 12 RBI. Fri. 14 Texas Southern* L, 0-3 Sat. 15 Texas Southern* L, 4-8 GRADUATE PANTHERS Den Beste was among six 2017 baseball Panthers to earn degrees this past weekend, along with Fri. 16 Texas Southern* L, 6-8 student assistant coach Joe Benes (graduate degree) and infielders Anthony Fernandez, Joshua Jefferson, Brashad Jones, and Tue. 18 Northwestern St. L, 1-16 Carson Lee. That group joined RHP Charles Philpott (Fall '16) as graduates in the Panther Baseball program. He has 54 hits, is tied for Fri. 5 GRAMBLING ST..* L, 7-12 (11) eighth in triples (three), has 79 total bases, and is tied for 10th in steals (15). He is second on the team in multi-hit games Sat. 6 GRAMBLING ST.* L, 2-10 (16) and third in multi-RBI games (six). Jamison had a 17-game on-base streak that ended May 7 vs. Grambling. SWAC Tournament • In his last 18 games with 16 starts, 2B Jalyn Baker has hit .350 with two home runs and 13 RBI. He hit a three-run walk-off Wed. 17 vs. #2E Alabama St. Noon homer with two outs in the ninth in the April 21 game win over Southern. Fri. 19 TBA TBA • RHP Darrien Williams threw a one-hitter at Grambling in game one on 4/1, hurling six no-hit innings before allowing a hit Sat. 20 TBA TBA to the leadoff batter in the seventh on a 10-0, seven-inning win. He has a 4-4 record and leads the team with a 4.19 ERA Sun. 21 TBA 11 a.m. with two complete games this season. • RHP Edgar Sanchez threw back-to-back complete games (vs. Southern 4/21; at UAPB 4/28 gm 2) and threw four complete * denotes SWAC games ^ MLB Invitational games this season.
