Having the Right Calculator Can Make a Big Difference on the Act® Test!

HAVING THE RIGHT CALCULATOR CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE ON THE ACT® TEST! Many students still use a non-graphing scientific calculator on the ACT® Math Test. They are missing out on the many features that an approved graphing calculator offers. I recommend either the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition graphing calculator, the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition color graphing calculator, or the TI-84 Plus CE color graphing calculator (best). The TI- 84 calculators have the following features not available on non-graphing scientific calculators: The PLYSMLT2 application which automatically solves quadratic equations and systems of linear equations. This application alone is worth the price of the calculator. The CONICS application which graphs non-functions such as circles and ellipses. The GRAPH utility for graphing and analyzing functions. The ability to perform calculations involving the Imaginary Number i. At least seven lines of display so a student can logically follow each step in the solution. This last feature is very important for many students. I worked with an athlete several years ago to qualify him academically to receive a Division I football scholarship. On the last ACT® test that he could take before graduating, he needed to increase his ACT® Math score by just one point to qualify. He only had a scientific calculator. So I loaned him my graphing calculator for the test, hoping that it might help him. He increased his ACT® Math score by seven points! When I asked him why his score increased by so much, he said that it definitely helped his reasoning skills to see each step of the solution being displayed on the calculator screen. Additionally, I believe that a graphing calculator can be empowering for a student who struggles in math. Not only can that student use the calculator on the ACT® Math test but also in his or her math and science courses in high school and college. Even if a teacher requires students to show their work on a test, by using a graphing calculator students can verify that they got the right answer. Graphing calculators are recommended for Trigonometry, Pre-Calc, Calculus, Statistics, Physics, and Chemistry courses. I will review all of the great features of the TI-84 calculator with the students during the ACT® course. Patrick M. Coyle, B.S. Physics, J.D. President, Aim High Test Prep Inc.
