The first day of early voting began on Monday, October 19th. Enthusiastic voters didn’t waste any time in arriving at voting centers right before the polls opened at 7 a.m. There were voters who waited over 45 minutes in line to get their vote in. Over the past few days, Floridians have flooded social media with pictures of the lines that continue to grow. In South Florida, Trump and Biden supporters haven’t been worried about the thunderstorms that have been affecting the area. Voters have been wearing ponchos, masks and carrying umbrellas in order to stay as dry as possible while waiting for their opportunity to reach the polls. ABC News states that more than 2.5 million voters have voted by mail in the state of Florida. There has been a record-breaking surge of Democrat mail voters who have given Joe Biden a massive lead over President Donald Trump. Although Democrats have given Biden a massive lead, there are predictions that Republicans will be showing up in masses to vote for Trump at voting centers. In Miami-Dade county, there are many people who are indecisive about who they’ll vote for, which may lead for the state of Florida to be a swing state, once again. We asked Barry University’s Political Science alumnus, Mateo Gomez, about his perspective on this election. He stated, “I feel like we have reached a point where the country is polarized. Everyone has two different or distinctive views politically.” Gomez continued to explain that he is an undecided voter because he is trying to understand Trump’s and Biden’s views and rhetoric before making a final decision. He feels as if there’s a lack of professionalism from both candidates, especially after watching the Presidential Debate that occurred in Cleveland on September 29th. Gomez continued to explain that we have changed the definition of “presidential professionalism in the United States”, after expressing the discomfort he felt from watching President Donald Trump and Joe Biden throw low-balls during the debate. “Joe Biden calling Trump a clown wasn’t presidential and it wasn’t presidential when Trump mentioned Biden’s son, Hunter… that left me shocked.” According to the Tampa Bay Times, the number of registered Republicans and Democrats is closer than ever in Florida. Tom Perez, the Democratic National Committee Chairman, shared with the Miami Herald that independent voters will have a say during this election, as well. He expressed that voters without party affiliation, which estimated to 500,000, will more than likely lean 99JAMZ towards BidenM.
