Press release / 16 février 2021 Gainsbourg Forever Special Tribute to Serge Gainsbourg Tuesday 2 March, French Institute in London, online The French Institute in London dedicates a special evening to Serge Gainsbourg on the occasion of the 30t h anniversary of his death and upon the publication of Relax Baby Be Cool by Jeremy Allen, on Tuesday 2 March, online. To this day the multifaceted musician and singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg remains an icon of French chanson and pop culture. Often provocative, scandalous at times, he marked the French pantheon of music with hits such as Bonnie and Clyde , Je t’aime moi non plus or Histoire de Melody Nelson, and he’s also remembered for the women he loved, his muses and performers, from Brigitte Bardot to Jane Birkin. His artistic legacy is huge and many artists from the international scene claim his influence from Pulp to Massive Attack, Air to Iggy Pop. In an online conversation with expert of French music David McKenna, Jeremy Allen, author of the newly published biography Relax Baby be Cool (Jawbone Press, 2021), will discuss the challenges of writing about such an icon and the “artistry and audacity” of the man behind the myth. An online screening of Gainsbour g by Gainsbourg, an Intimate Self-Portrait, a rare documentary by Pierre-Henry Salfat will complete the evening. Using an impressive array of songs, clips from home-movies, photographs intertwined with a fascinating montage of TV and radio interviews, this original and moving portrait gave Gainsbourg the opportunity to recount his life.
