BU R EAU 0 1: lA N MA~A GE M E NT Nat i ona l l a n d sc a p e: C o n se rv a t o n y s t e m JUANBAUTISTA DE ANZA NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL Location The juan Bautista de Anza Nat io nal istoric Tr2il meanders through a variety of t errain ranging from extreme desert to coastal areas between Nogales, Arizona, and San Francisco, California. The trail crosses publi c lands primaril y admi nistered by the Bureau of Land Management (B LM) Yuma and Phoenix Fiel d O ffi ces in Ari:wna. There is an aut o tour rout:e that closely parallels thei:rail and follows Intersl aTes 19, 10, and 8 between Nogales and Yuma, Arizona. Brief Description Juan Baut ista de Anza, Captain of the Royal Presidio at Tu bac, Sonora, (now southern Arizona), set out o n an important expediTio n in the fall of 1775.This jo urney had its beginning in the Coloniai New Spain (Mexican) towns of Culiacan and Horcasitas, where tradesmen and their fam ilies joined the company. Anza provided mil itary escort fo r more t han 240 people and 1,000 head of livestock moving from Tubac to San Francisco, Cal ifornia. This was an expedit ion of more than 2,700 miles, with most of the company mounted on horseback and ot her pack animals. Anza is Cledited with opening an overland route from Sonora to Alta C al ifo rnia, and recording val uable info rmat ion on his exploration fo r Spanish colonization. Although the Ama Trail began in C uliaca I , t he po rtion of t he ro ute est abli shed between Nogales,Arizona, and San Francisco, California, was designat ed by Congress as a Natio nal Historic Trail in 1990. The National Park Service (NPS) administers the trail, but wo rks in partnership with federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as private landowne r-s who manage or own lands along the trail route. Access The auto tour route provides continuous driving access alo ng the trail corridor. Contact agencies or landowners associated with specifi c trail segmencs for access to the histor!c lOute. Do not enter private la:lds without permission. Recreational Opportunities Opportunities include camping, hiking, and wild life viewing. Many points of historical or cult ural interest can also be found along the trail. Vehicles must rem2-in on existing roa~<; . Facilities None Safety Environmental conditions along the route in Arizona may vary from extreme heat to flash floods. Poisonous reptiles and insects may be encountered. Be prepared with the appropriate equipment and supplies, including sufficient water for a remote setting. Fou r­ wheel drive vehicles are recommended for areas where there is access to the historic route.
