Wellesley College 2006-07 P E R A Annual Report The Wellesley College department of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics is dedicated to promoting an improved quality of life for all Wellesley College students through increased understanding, skill, competititon and participation in physical activity. The Department meets the needs of a variety of students through its three programs and also partnerships with a wide variety of campus departments. • Physical Education: instructional classes • Recreation: leisure time activities • Athletics: intercollegiate competitive teams 2006-07 PERA Department Goals The overarching theme for PERA was to enhance communication, collaboration and integration among the campus community (students, faculty, staff) in support of fitness, intercollegiate and recreational activities, valued components of life-long learning. Additionally, yet equally critical, was the importance of building and encouraging an inclusive “team approach,” of leadership in PERA. The team approach included the student voice, critical within the Wellesley community. Moving forward together resulted in continued promotion of the educational values and mission of the department in support of student learning in an academically rigorous liberal arts environment. Significant progress was made, including: o Partnered with class deans and Residence Life in support of First Year Orientation week. o Partnered with SBOG for Blue Pride Spirit Week - Sept. 26 - Oct. 5. o Partnered with Student Activities for Friends & Family weekend – Oct. 27-29. o Established “Blue Pride Blog”, weekly electronic newsletter to promote the results and activities of PERA Varsity Sports, Recreation and Student Activities Club Sports. o A FOWCA solicitation was mailed on Jan. 29, 2007 to 10 year members; student-athlete alumnae and parents with two targeted projects (cardio/strength areas and competitive training fund for varsity and club sports). 1 o Established a partnership with Alumnae Association, Student Activities and PERA to link Alumnae Leadership Council and Family & Friends week with FOWCA Homecoming beginning in 2007 (October 13-15). o Partnered with Center for Work and Service, Women’s Studies and PERA to sponsor campus presentation “Soaring to New Heights, Climbing Mt. Everest” with Anne Parmenter, Head Field Hockey Coach at Trinity College on April 23, 2007. o Created PERA Department Advisory Group (Faculty, Staff, Administrative representatives). o Partnered with CG-SOAC to establish PERA Student Advisory Committee comprising 12 students representing, physical education, club, varsity, recreational and residence life areas to meet monthly with PERA chair/director, effective 2/07. o Chair/Director invited to College Government meeting on Sept. 18; met with UNITY twice. o Awarded NCAA Division III Women & Ethnic Minority Internship Grant for Assistant Director Position (two-year internship) to support Club Sports, intramurals, FOWCA and serve as Assistant Coach. o Received NCAA On-Campus Diversity Education Workshop grant for students, faculty, coaches & administrators on February 28, 2007. o Hired department office coordinator and administrative assistant for chair/director. o Hired full-time sports information /communications director. o Administrative structure changes including promotion/title changes and additional assignments for associate athletic director; associate director of facilities, recreation and operations, assistant athletic director; PE registrar/ assistant sports information director. Physical Education Mission The physical education curriculum provides students with skills and knowledge to continue lifelong participation in fitness, dance, martial arts and sport skill activities. Many physical education courses include a capstone/culmination experience for our students. This base of knowledge and skills of physical activity is an essential component of the liberal arts education at Wellesley College and is required of all students for completion of their undergraduate degree. 2006-07 PE Class Offerings AQUATICS ACTIVITIES DANCE ACTIVITIES MARTIAL ARTS Elementary Swimming Ballet Self-Defense Basic Sailing Jazz Tai Chi Stroke Technique Swimming Modern Kung Fu African Dance SPORTS ACTIVITIES FITNESS ACTIVITIES Afro-Brazilian Dance Archery Aerobics (Hip Hop; Step & Tone) Caribbean Dance Badminton Pilates Classical Indian Dance Fencing Cardio Kickboxing Latin Dance Golf Fusion Fitness Latin Combo Dance Cooperative Sports and Strength Training Salsa Games Racquetball Yoga (Hatha/Iyengar) Skiing/Snowboarding Table Tennis Tennis (Beginner/Intermediate) In addition to the wide variety of courses offered, students can participate for credit in dorm and class crew races. Teams from residence halls and class years, coached by students, hold practices in preparation for an end-of-semester race on Lake Waban. Participation in club sports, including ice hockey, rugby, sailing and ultimate Frisbee, were also counted for credit toward the PE requirement. 2 2006-07 Physical Education Enrollments Semester 1 Winter Semester 2 Total Spaces % Capacity Physical Education 649 105 545 1299 1768 73% Independent/Club Credit 121 Varsity Sport Credit 299 Total 1719 Significant Physical Education Goals Achieved During 2006-07: • Establishment of Physical Education on-line registration process into existing self-service system through a partnership with the Registrar, IT Senior Project Manager and EAI Manager. The registration process was effective for term three registration. • Added three activity courses to the PE curriculum: Basic Sailing, Canoeing and Cooperative Sports and Games. • Conducted an on-line survey of all students in spring semester to assess the status of the physical education curriculum and it’s impact on achieving the outcome and impact of contributing to physically active students within a liberal arts education. [Attachment] • Discussed and updated expectations, responsibilities and process for faculty member submission of PE course proposals, new and continuing. • Reviewed PE and academic schedule comparison to assess days and times of offerings to make PE courses more available to all students. The review resulted in the following changes: o Additional T/F 1:40 pm and 3:00 pm classes; Addition of 8:30 am class. o Addition of two evening classes. Recreation PERA provides recreational activities for the Wellesley student body so that they can actively integrate the physical and social dimensions of their lives to enhance their college experience. The department assists students in forming activity interest groups to provide opportunities for activities learned in the physical education program to become a part of the student’s life-long activity choices. 2006-07 RECREATION PROGRAMS Fall: • Dorm Crew • Pep Buses to the Head of the Charles Regatta (largest regatta in the world) • Turkey Trot (canned food drive) • Recreational boating (sailing and canoeing-12 hours/week) Winter: • Downhill skiing and snowboarding at Nashoba Valley (for fun or PE credit) • Winter Games (includes water relays, dry land relays and floor hockey) • Night Hike (cancelled due to bad weather) Spring: • Mini Marathon fun Run/Walk (2.6 miles around campus) • Class Crew • Recreational boating (sailing and canoeing-12 hours/week) Ongoing Daily Opportunities: • Strength training (over 60 hours per week) • Cardio (over 80 hours per week) 3 • Swimming (over 30 hours per week) • Aerobics (11 per week-7 in KSC-4 in dorms on east campus) • Nehoiden Golf Course Significant Recreation Goals Achieved During 2006-07: • Expanded sports center building, swimming and strength training hours and access to enhance fitness/sport needs and desired for students faculty and staff. (7:30 am to 11:30 pm, effective 2/12/07) • Partnered with Residence Life to offer recreational aerobics to East Campus-three classes per week in Freeman Living Room.
